Maybe You’ve Outgrown Us
I haven’t written anything really real in years; I barely remember how.

Heather Hogan noticed that I had taken up permanent residence in the comments of “Boobs on Your Tube” every Friday, basically writing recaps of my own (I felt lost, Autostraddle was my port in the storm). Heather asked if I had ever considered writing about television as a career. She said, “We can pay you. Not as much as we’d like to, but we’ll find the money. Is that something you’d be into?”
I wrote back, “That is something that I would VERY MUCH be into! In fact, I hope it’s not too unprofessional to say that I would love it with all of my heart.”
We live in a time when you can see yourself reflected in all kinds of media, from all kinds of corporations, who never liked to talk about us before. But when you click on those things, you are giving people money who are not part of our community.
“Alex Mack has not one but TWO lesbian names.”
Not to be one of those divorced people who makes everything about their divorce!, but getting divorced will really teach you that nothing about making something “real” or deciding you’re all in makes it any more secure.
We’re not the only independent media outlet out there, but we think there is one thing we all have in common — and that’s that reader support is the absolute only way for indie media to survive.
In 2012, a Condé Nast website called style.com published an article with the headline: “IS LESBIAN CHIC HERE TO STAY?” In this thrilling piece of supposed journalism, the writer remarked, “Lesbians! They’re everywhere.”
Join us for a conversation with Riese Bernard (Co-Founder and CEO of Autostraddle) and Gabrielle Korn (author of “Everybody (Else) is Perfect,” former EIC of Nylon, former Autostraddle writer) about building the queer media you want to see in the world, and the work that is left to do!
I was hustling to make life work as a freelance writer and graphic designer and workshop presenter (and, like, food delivery person and countless other gigs) in an increasingly treacherous digital media landscape.
“Molly’s Aunt Eleanor was the original American Girl lesbian aunt. I’m just saying.”
You may have noticed we’re fundraising again! We’re here to tell you about what we’ve done with your support since our last fundraiser, and what we’re planning to accomplish if we continue to survive thanks to your support.
From 6am PST February 13 – 8pm PST February 14, we’re hosting an A+ Member Only Discord Server with channels for (maybe) meeting dates, meeting internet friends, or just sharing photos of your houseplants and adorable animal companions.
1. Come out to my family. 2. Buy a plane ticket anywhere.
Autostraddle is one of very few queer media outlets or publications still around in 2021 (though we’re always thrilled to see new ones join us!). And considering, you know, everything, we very well might not be around someday. But we’re hoping that with the support of our community, we’ll be able to say: NOT TODAY, SATAN! We’re going to stick this one out, with a little help. Okay? Okay.
“I am 100% buying this book with the money my homophobic aunt and uncle gave me for the holidays!”
The Autostraddle store is full of some of the best gay merch you’ll ever lay your little gay eyes on.
“No compensative effervescence is really a pandemic mood.”
As a fat person, the media I consume that is centered on fatness is crucial to creating an environment where I feel supported and uplifted. She’s All Fat is definitely a part of that repertoire.
“Carol, if you are reading this… call me.”
“The Janet Mock-Turtleneck is a much-appreciated fashion innovation!”
