Seven Queer Horror Games You Should Consider Playing
To me, playing a horror game held higher stakes than watching a movie. In many scenarios, you’re literally controlling the character’s moves and choices.

Adventure games, farming sims, and even a musical! Check out this list of some of the best — and queerest — games of 2023.

“The Last of Us Part II” and the Never Ending Endings of Endlessness
I did my best to not let my lurking paranoia get in the way of being happy during certain portions of the game but it was an ever present feeling. Even now, having finished the game, it is still there. The few times I forgot about it I found myself taking comfort in two women deeply in love, in the shit together.

Don’t Let the Stick Figures Fool You, “West of Loathing” Is One of the Best RPGs I’ve Ever Played
“Maybe it’s my depression talking, but I think running errands is heroic.”
-
You Should Play “NieR: Automata” if You Like Hot Androids, Cute Robots, or Nude Somebodies
The combat has a frenetic arcade-iness that makes me a little giddy even as I’m being chewed up by the robot dog that was for some reason built under the metallic skirts of the robot diva that was for some reason deemed an essential part of the robot invasion force.

“Detroit: Become Human” Mines Familiar Social Justice Stories for Empathy and Fails Miserably
It’s a really pretty game, though, and there’s a very good dog.

“Butterfly Soup” and “GENDERWRECKED” Are the Queer Indie Games You’re Looking For
These days, I constantly crave queer ass stories about queer ass characters. Luckily for us all, there are some incredible indie game creators who are here to give the people what we want: gays!

“Celeste” Is a Very Difficult Video Game for People Who Know What It’s Like to Have Something to Prove
Celeste sets out to climb a mountain and learns a whole lot about herself along the way.

“Life Is Strange: Before the Storm” Episode Three Is Such a Frustrating End to Such a Beautiful Thing
“The question I asked after Episode One was always hovering, and it’s up to Episode Three to answer it: Is this story as doomed as it seems it has to be, and is that a story we should allow ourselves to get invested in? I super wish I could tell you that the day was saved and everybody is okay or, most of all, that the story honored itself to the very end. I wish a lot of things, let me tell you.”

“Dishonored: Death of the Outsider” Gives Us Another Queer Protagonist We Want to Go Stabbing and Drink a Beer With
It’s also just so great to see a major games developer consistently shrug off the idea that a protagonist has to be a white man somewhere between CW Love Interest and CW Hot Dad in age whose character development can be deduced by counting the number of grey hairs in his angst-stubble.

“Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” Joins a Growing List of Video Games That Explore Mental Illness
Nothing is straightforward about Senua’s journey.

“Life Is Strange: Before the Storm” Review: Be Prepared To Love Chloe More Than You Ever Thought Possible
This is, essentially, the best angst fanfiction I have ever read.

If You Ever Wanted To Play “NBA Jam” Dressed Like a Wizard, “Pyre” Is The Game For You
Each party member has different strengths (like big, powerful demon dreamboat Jodariel can wreck opponents but is very slow, or sweet; nervous doggo Rukey is fast as heck but not great on defense).
-
“Plague, Inc.” Will Put You in the Mood to Destroy the World
This is the opposite of the games I usually play and it is a very welcome break. There is no plot. I AM the plot.
-
“What Remains of Edith Finch” is Trying to Break Your Heart
You are sure that you are marching each Finch toward their death, and you want to do something different, but these stories have already been written.
-
“Prey” Has It All: Scary Space Monsters and A Canonically Queer Female Protagonist
I died a lot of times! I also collected every piece of trash I ever saw, turned myself into a bottle of whiskey to sneak into a narrow doorway, and accidentally recycled a few crew members into organic materials. I regret maybe that last thing, but very little else. This is a good game.
-
“Ladykiller in a Bind” Is the Surprise Love Story I Didn’t Know I Needed
Think of the 2001 Disney Channel Original Movie Motocrossed without the bikes and plus a whole lot of kink.
-
“Horizon Zero Dawn” Is a Surprisingly Beautiful Apocalypse
The story never exactly surprised me, but the way it unfolds made it seem more inevitable than predictable. To stop the new world from ending, you need to find out how the old one ended, and the answer is: horribly, preventably, and sadly. Really really sadly.

“Dishonored 2” Review: The Beautiful Chaos Of A Magical Lady Assassin
Right now I’m a girl fighting a girl arch-nemesis and my headquarters is a ship with a girl captain and a girl mad scientist and I feel real good about everything besides my chaos level and the fact that I think my next mission is to rescue a boy from a boy.

“Limbo” Will Haunt and Decapitate You (In A Fun Way)
Limbo looks adorable, but it’s a haunting 2-D puzzle game with a dark mystery and a bizarro ending.
