We’re looking for a talented writer and editor with leadership chops, digital media experience and a repository of SEO knowledge to join our team as a Deputy Editor. Second in rank to the Editor-in-Chief, the Deputy Editor will be responsible for developing a vision that aligns our creative and ethical goals with the oft-compromising reality that our survival depends on content that performs well on search engines. The Deputy Editor will also be writing their own work, editing work from freelance writers, managing our team of part-time Subject Editors and consulting on all-around strategy.

The Deputy Editor will have a vested interest in creating online media and community that is fun, accessible, intellectual and analytical. They will value the importance of working together as a part of a small team on large projects, and be self-driven to follow through projects from conception to completion.

You will be primarily working remotely, and we are interested in applicants from anywhere in the United States. If you are located in a major U.S. metro area, please let us know. There are a number of in-person events, meetings and interviews where adjacency to cities such as L.A., New York, San Francisco and Chicago is helpful.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Working with online tools and internal and external consultants to develop good, smart, efficient editorial strategy for SEO-optimized content, including monitoring relevant search trends, adjusting workflow processes, and soliciting, writing and editing content in line with our SEO goals.
  • Writing 2-3 posts a week.
  • Working with the Editor-in-Chief to meet traffic goals and guide the editorial, creative and cultural vision of Autostraddle.com.
  • Assuming the role of Editor-in-Chief in her absence.
  • Managing and mentoring a team of 4-5 part-time Subject Editors.
  • Working with the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief to manage team writers.
  • Self-managing a pipeline of soliciting, responding to solicited pitches, editing and publishing team and freelance writers.
  • Representing Autostraddle in person, as press or participant, as needed at events (e.g., GLAAD Awards, Press Junkets).
  • Collaborating with the entire senior team and our A+/Fundraising Director to brainstorm and craft annual/bi-annual Fundraising campaigns and monthly A+ content.
  • As needed, working with our Advertising + Affiliates director to craft pitches for spon-con.

The ideal candidate’s background will include:

  • 3+ years of experience writing and/or editing for a digital publication.
  • Complete literacy in SEO for publishers and related tools.
  • The ability to produce content on a tight turnaround and craft clever headlines while bringing unique views and well-honed analysis to stories relevant to our community that are full of your own voice.
  • Existing proficiency (or quick learning!) of basic HTML, Google Analytics, Slack, WordPress, Jetpack Stats, Yoast, Photoshop, Airtable, Google Search Console, Parse.ly and Mailchimp.
  • Experience managing people or project management, performing customer service, social media.
  • Familiarity with online community culture and the specific nuances of politically progressive queer spaces.
  • Impeccable and intuitive writing, editing and copyediting skills.
  • An interest and natural/instinctive ability to connect with readers using writing and social media, a strong personal brand.
  • Solid social skills in all formats (email, chat, phone, IRL).
  • A commitment to anti-racism and the inclusion of disabled and trans people in queer communities.

Founded by a group of friends using a queen bed as a desk in a cramped Morningside Heights apartment, Autostraddle has since grown to a leading media company financed primarily by the support of our passionate community of readers. We are dedicated to creating stable and supportive opportunities for employment, contract work and self-expression for LGBTQIA+ people. Aside from our annual staff retreat, our office is entirely remote with a full-time team of 9 employees, as well as numerous part-time and freelance workers.

You are largely able to set your own hours with the expectation that they will overlap with required meetings and the hours of other team members as much as possible. Twice a month you will be tasked with “weekend editor” duties, which involve 2-3 hours of weekend work as well as being aware of what’s happening on the website and in Slack over the weekend. We’re looking for a talented, unique writer and editor with a stack of big content ideas you’re eager to unleash upon the internet. Ideally your own writing will run the gamut stylistically, from funny weird shit to servicey tips to deep essays and actual journalism. You will be working with team and freelance writers to hone their skills and publish high-caliber, voicey, engaging articles and essays. And you’ll be eager to connect with the Autostraddle community through your work and their feelings!

Responsibilities include:

  • Writing 2-3 posts a week.
  • Editing of freelance and team writers: self-management of pipeline of soliciting, responding to solicited pitches, editing and publishing.
  • Managing the publishing calendar.
  • Building our network of freelance writers with your own contacts as well as actively seeking new voices to add to our roster.
  • Working with the Deputy Editor and Editor-in-Chief to manage team writers.
  • Developing, managing and publishing content packages for events like Pride and the Winter Holidays as well as quarterly mid-size themed content weeks designed to peak reader engagement and interest (e.g. Butt Week, Missed Connections, I Think We’re Alone Now Week).
  • Periodically checking and responding to external submissions.
  • Collaborating with the entire senior team and our A+/Fundraising Director to brainstorm and craft annual/bi-annual Fundraising campaigns and monthly A+ content.

The ideal candidates background will include:

  • 1+ years management experience in online media.
  • 2+ years experience as an editor in any setting (includes work as a writing instructor/teacher of some kind).
  • A genuine, consuming passion for working with people to build their skills as writers and editors, especially writers whose voices have historically been marginalized.
  • Impeccable and intuitive writing, editing and copyediting skills.
  • A strong writer’s voice and the ability to produce inventive and/or newsy content on a tight turnaround with clever headlines and lively prose as well as a flexible style.
  • Self-discipline and self-starter qualities within a remote working capacity.
  • Project management experience.

Autostraddle is looking for an ambitious and experienced salesperson to amp up our presence in the advertising space in a leadership role as the Senior Director of Advertising Sales.

The ideal candidate will be a personable, detail-oriented project manager and problem solver, able to work independently towards shared goals and build meaningful relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You’ll be a talented written and oral communicator who gets excited about brainstorming and developing creative, unique brand partnerships, and be a self-starter who’s able to jump right in on a significant workload.

You will be working remotely with a small team of 9 full-time employees across the country, but will occasionally be required to meet with clients in-person, and therefore ideally you will be located in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco or the surrounding regions. Although other team members will assist you with brainstorming, sponsored content and visual design, you will be the only full-time employee devoted to Advertising Sales.

Historically we have relied on revenue from subscribers and events to comprise our budget, but we are looking to shift towards a model that relies equally, if not moreso, on advertising. This is our first full-time position dedicated solely to advertising, and your work will enable our company to continue providing community and reliable employment for LGBTQ+ people, and prove the incredible viability of the queer market to brands worldwide.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Putting together media packages and pricing for RFPs.
  • Researching and cold-calling prospective advertisers (national and regional) consistent with our target demographic.
  • Building relationships with prospective and current advertisers.
  • Effectively articulating and communicating the Autostraddle brand through marketing materials and proposals.
  • Attending in-person meetings, conferences and events as necessary.
  • Project managing our team members and external contractors involved in the execution of a campaign from concept to completion.
  • Providing recap decks to demonstrate ROI to clients post-campaign.
  • Selecting and managing our ad insertion platforms for programmatic and direct campaigns.

The ideal candidate’s background will include:

  • 2+ years of proven expertise and experience working in digital ad sales.
  • An understanding of the current ad sales marketplace, as well as current trends in LGBTQ media, podcasting, women’s media, publishing and social media.
  • Prior business development, content strategy or a marketing role, ideally in the advertising sales digital marketing sector.
  • Familiarity with digital ad technology and current industry trends.
