You know we wrote some really important things this year, did some journalism, broke your heart open with some essays, dug into our collective souls with roundtables and mourned this hellfire of a year. But also, Sara Ramirez wore a very nice outfit.

The 20 Most Popular Autostraddle Posts of 2017

1. Kieryn Darkwater / January

Now our most popular post of all time, this is a terrifying narrative from Kieryn Darkwater, who grew up sheltered and closeted in a far-right evangelical conservative movement, raised by parents involved in the Quiverfull subculture — wholly dedicated, from a young age, to the project of taking over the government and the U.S. population for Jesus.

4. Riese Bernard & Heather Hogan / February

Our original list debuted in the summer of 2015, and although 2016 was an abysmal year for queer women in cinema, a few late 2015 releases plus some feedback on the original required a new list. Little did we know what lied in store for 2017.

  1. Way to go Carmen!

I’m so glad a bunch of these posts are personal essays and news/politics articles. I love everything ya’ll write about television, movies and celebrities, obviously, but I’m happy that the other stuff is getting the credit and eyeballs it deserves as well.

Thanks to everyone at Autostraddle for another amazing year of quality queer content – I couldn’t have made it through this garbage fire of a year without you!

  2. Thank you so much Riese and everyone else here for another amazing year of writing. For me and I’m sure many many others this has been one of the hardest, most upsetting and infuriating years I can remember, and the community and support here has been a critically important source of hope and strength. I love you all.

Here’s to 2018 being a year of reckoning and justice for the greedy gluttonous monsters trying to destroy the world in their horrific image. And to healing all the damage they’ve done.

  3. That “I Was Trained for the Culture Wars in Home School, Awaiting Someone Like Mike Pence as a Messiah”is super scary

    • The scariest part was some of the folks who came outta the wood works to “save” Kieryn or proclaim them a liar.

The scariest one was there cheery af lady who put down that passage number of bit of the Bible which basically says drown the people influencing the kiddos. Like was she trained to just spit out that passage number when trying to “save” people ignorant to what the passage actually said or did she really know that passage and really mean it?

      Fucking evangelical Dolores Umbridge *shudders*

  4. I remember most of these but I’d missed Excommunicate Me From the Church of Social Justice. So glad I got to read it today and I’m so glad you posted it here. What an important piece!

  5. A welcome look back on some fantastic writing. Thank you for another good year. The Evangelical expose was chilling but so enlightening. Nothing like know your enemy.

  6. “75 Lesbian Ken Dolls, Ranked By Lesbianism” is the best post EVER, no doubts about it, after all it gave us “Lesbian Ken” Community Photo Gallery.
