Also.Also.Also: Lesbian Foster Parents in the Bible Belt and Other Stories for Your Face

feature image via Scalawag

Hello. I’ve been treating myself to an espresso and an iced tea in the early afternoons this week and let me tell you something, it’s changed my whole deal. MY WHOLE DEAL ! I don’t know what’s going on — is it just because I’m taking a minute to do something purely selfish? Is it the caffeine? How the single shot with a packet of raw sugar reminds me of being 22 with very few cares in this glorious world aside from watching Nick Jr. at the correct times? All three maybe?? IDK BUT I’M SO PLEASED WITH MYSELF AND MY DECISIONS.

What about you though, have you changed your whole deal in a pleasing way lately? Oh! I used this really amazing-smelling conditioner and also painted my nails today! Y’all I am truly on a roll. Please join me in living a lowkey version of your best life. We deserve it all, just like those ladies on Dallas.

  1. Hi, why yes, we are lesbian/queer foster parents in the bible belt. I even found a group of us on Facebook. Thanks for sharing the article. And maybe one of our placements has RAD or maybe other abuse history, but maybe we’re making it through.

      • Aww, thanks! And I’m working on living my best low-keyed life. I want to do this parenting thing (except for those moments when I don’t because sometimes it’s just what I wanted and other times not but isn’t that true of so many things in life). My wife and I just had a good talk about creating more of a partnership, so hopefully she will be able to follow through, because I do love her so but sometimes need help instead of having to be responsible for all of the things. For work I may be switching my more stressful part-time job for a less stressful part-time job doing construction type work on houses, and the more I think about it the happier the idea makes me, so I’m thinking I should go for it when my contract is up at the end of the school year.

  2. For the first time since I graduated college 15 years ago, I have health insurance through my employer for my part-time job with the state. Others at my work have complained about what they see as low wages. I however have no complaints. I have health insurance, and paid sick days! But it is crazy to see what can happen without it. Or even when my wife had health insurance through her previous job, it wasn’t particularly and we are still 7 months later paying on a trip to the emergency room when she wasn’t feeling well.
