According to a friend, Gibson was visiting her friends and family in New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras. That friend added, “She was just a really good person. Everyone loved her. This is unnecessary.”
“My niece shows me her Instagram feed and I see no one like her looking back at me. The people I love have fleeting reflections in the media.”
While any and all support for the trans community is necessary and welcome, the ACLU is missing the mark with this hashtag. The big swing and miss for me is the fact that SB6 is an anti-trans bill that specifically aims to single out trans feminine individuals, regardless of sexual orientation.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to report on this murder earlier because Striker was disrespected and misgendered by police and media in death.
“I refuse to place myself in danger because it makes some fools at the Texas capital uncomfortable that girls like me exist publicly. I will not be limited to a sexual fantasy or some kind of untouchable position in society because I am a transgender woman.”
Wounded Arrow was loved by many and will be sorely missed. Her murder is hitting the community hard. The Sioux Falls Two-Spirit group said “our hearts are broke as we will miss her very much. So again, prayers are needed. Pilamaye.”

Edmonds is at least the 21st trans person murdered in the US this year. We knew of at least 23 last year.
While we don’t know the exact number and almost certainly never will, we know that she is at least the 20th trans person murdered this year, most of them being Black and Brown trans women.
If they are feeling hurt by people who don’t want to use their pronouns or just by a long day of having to gender in the world, listen to them and ask how you can help ease the stress.
After we learned about three trans women, all of them Black, being murdered in July, the number of trans people reported murdered in the US this year became 17, now with Tijerina, it’s 18.

At this point last year, we knew about fifteen trans women who had been murdered, which means that despite all the “progress” that trans people have been making in the media, in courthouses and in the halls of congress, trans people are being murdered at the same rate.
We now live in a world where it is totally possible to claim the same word as someone else and completely disagree on what the word means.
