Queer Outfit of the Week: Testing Out Your New Year’s Resolution in a Snow Storm

It’s January 1st, 2014 and you’re probably starting to chip away at your New Year’s Resolutions! I’ve made a lot of New Years Resolutions this year, primarily to be braver and bolder than ever before, and that includes finally wearing those things you’re scared of. You know, the thing you see everyone else wear but just aren’t sure you can pull off.

For me, that’s thigh-high stockings. I love thigh-high stockings, specifically over another pair of nylons, but I’m always scared to wear them. That’s why this week’s outfit, just perfect for that snow storm we have coming, features my New Year’s Resolution style and a big warm sweater.

A snowstorm is a great time to try out that New Years style you’ve been waiting for because, well, the stakes are super low. If you decide you hate it you can just chalk it up to a bad snow storm situation. If you love your new look, testing it out in a snow storm can be invigorating– helping you to brave the bad weather.

Still, when that big snow storm hits you might be tempted to just grab your thickest fleece lined leggings, slouchy hat, a V-neck sweater and your huge winter boots. Just like you do every storm. Instead I implore you to take the opportunity to layer up! Throw a funky pattern sweater over a dress over shorts over thigh-high stockings over nylons for layers and layers of cuteness and warmth.

Now, you might want to keep your warmest Sorel boots around while the snow is still piling up, but it’s always a good idea to have some smaller, lighter ankle boots or shoes to tromp through the snow when your feet get tired. Your neighborhood might be snowy for days, but you’ll get exhausted (and bored) if you keep lugging around your heavy snow boots.qootw-01-01-14

I’ll be trying out this adorable thigh-high stockings look, but you should take this snow storm to try out your New Year’s resolution. Maybe you’ll throw on sultry dark berry-red lipstick while you shovel the walk. Maybe you’ll bind for the first time while you trek out to pick up more wood for the fire. This snow storm could be the perfect opportunity to try out suspenders alone in your heated cozy bedroom over and over again until you finally decide to sneak out in the blizzard bundled up, suspendended and all.

So you, yes, you right there. If you have a style you’re just dying to try in 2014 be sure to hit me up at lizz [at] autostraddle [dot] com and tell me just exactly what you want to see next week, and every week, this year.

  1. Lizz! I wore basically this same outfit for the first time last week, except with denim shorts, and of course with red lipstick. I felt so awesome and confident all day. I only just started wearing more femme-y clothes, and this was a big step for me.

    • It’s really cute with shorts, right?! My friend wore thigh highs over tights over shorts for New Years and I felt so boring and was so jealous!

  2. I’m trying to come up with outfit ideas for an outdoor/indoor winter date, stockings seem like an awesome idea over tights.

    • I agree that this is like a perfect date outfit, I just can’t call every week Date Night Look or else you guys would figure out that I basically am just choosing date outfits! Oops!

  3. I WAS ALL OVER THIS FOR NEW YEARS

wore purple thigh-highs over fishnets under a sequined cheetah-print skirt, I got all the compliments b/c it’s a fab look

  4. This is a thing I do. It is great for extra warmth. I use really chunky knit thigh-high socks over my tights.

    • I feel like I’ve seen this on you and you were one of the first people I was jealous of! I just need to commit to doing it!
