I had heard about Reina Gossett and Grace Dunham’s close relationship, and how it was informing some incredible work together, so I sought them out to find out more — over the course of our afternoon together in NYC, our conversation covered everything from the damages of biological essentialism to the radical power of empathy to how important it is to feel sexy sometimes.
Sometimes, it can be hard to parse out exactly why queer and trans people have such a hard time getting by while the headlines would suggest we are advancing by leaps and bounds. On January 23rd and 24th, queer and trans people converged in New York City for the Invisible Lives, Targeted Bodies Conference to explore how the struggle for queer and trans justice and liberation is inextricably linked to struggles for economic, racial, immigrant, disability and reproductive justice.

“The need for hate crime legislation for the state that covers gender identity/expression and sexuality is, of course, paramount, but it strikes me as odd that in a case in which more factors than just sexuality or gender expression were present, that only that was touched upon, both in the coverage by major news sources and what the “hate” would be constituted as.”
“When will white feminists take collective responsibility for educating themselves? When will they understand the power at play that sings in their skins? We don’t exist in a vacuum and women of colour don’t exist to hold their hands and explain in painful detail why their behaviour continues to hurt us. Intersectional feminist politics are not for white women to co-opt as their own.”
“Good Girls” reminds us that patriarchy is not only a tool for men, but a tool for women with other privileged identities to use against women with marginalized identities.
The question of homophobia in historically Black churches is way more nuanced than conversations about Christianity and queerness often take into account. If the Black church and LGBTQ movements joined forces, they would be a force to reckon with.
And it’s hard to know how to feel about it.
When we hear about legislation like the 2014 Farm Bill, we don’t and we won’t hear the mainstream media talking about queer people.

For queer women of color, intersectionality isn’t just a “concept” or a “framework” for theorists to use for mind exercise — it’s a lived experience.
“Melaine Randall has said that “the day we start defining feminism, it has lost its vitality.” I’d parry with “the day we start defining feminism, we get an enormous headache and end up subjecting readers to like 1500 words of confusion, because it is impossible.”
