Queer Outfit of the Week: Throwback Party with Childhood Friends

Welcome to Queer Outfit of the Week where I scour the world and tell you all about my one favorite queer outfit this week. I’ll envision a scenario where you or your girlfriend or your best friend or your mom or your cat could wear it and talk all about why it’s a great outfit for that event. Every week will be a different style, gender presentation and event so there’s a little something for everyone — even the person who just wants to look at pictures of stylish queers! So let’s get to it — we’re going to figure out what the heck we’re going to wear this week!

If you’ve gone home for Thanksgiving then there’s a real good chance you’ve already been invited to a big raging party this weekend (or even tonight) with all the kids you went to high school with. Probably your best friends will be there and you’re bound to have an awesome and possibly hazy night filled with a couple of laughs and couple beers and preferably a designated driver. Your real friends don’t care what you wear, but who knows who else you might see! Maybe the first girl you kissed or the boy you awkwardly went to prom with before both of you came out a week later. Regardless, you’re going to need to look sharp, so let’s find you this week’s best new look.

Kicking back with friends from high school isn’t the time to look too stuffy, but certainly you want to look put together. I’ve long been a supporter of blazers for just about any time you want to bring an outfit together. I particularly like this cocoa colored corduroy one for a casual fall party. The color contrasts perfectly with a pair of light wash straight leg jeans, but the fabric keeps the overall look soft and casual. Any light colored blazer in a corduroy or velvet will work in a similar way, particularly if you jazz it up with a funky button and a contrasting handkerchief or pocket square.

I can’t get enough of polka dots and while the trend might be running its last mile this year, it’s not too late to hop aboard right now! To keep polka dots appropriate for autumn, opt for a white or colored polka dot on a darker colored fabric. Dark blue is a good option, but steer clear of chambray for this particular look — even the darkest denim might look a bit cowboy when paired with washed-out jeans.

If you’re looking for something a bit femmier, I would swap the jeans and oxford for a navy colored dress, but keep the blazer so you don’t freeze! Alternatively you can simply go for a more narrow blazer and more femme jeans.

Finish off your look for your hometown night out with the most important accessory: a watch! That way you can Suddenly Realize You’re Late For Something Important if you run into that lab partner turned ex-girlfriend. I hope she’s not still mad about the time you slashed her tires. Good luck with that. At least you can hide in your soft new blazer.

  1. So, even though I live in a country without Thanksgiving, I still have one of these on Saturday. How did you know? Also, I appreciate your appreciation for a good blazer. It’s the only thing that can make a sleep shirt and yesterday’s jeans look “so put together, how do you do that?”

  2. I feel like there is an Autostraddle article somewhere about how to wear button-down shirts if you are a person whose large boobs make it impossible to find a shirt that fits. I need to find this article so I can wear these kinds of outfits without looking ridiculous.

  3. This outfit is generally fine, but I do have one major gripe — bootcut jeans? So 10 years ago! They should be skinny jeans, or at least tapered, no matter how butch one wants to take ’em. Sorry for the superficiality of this post, but the topic is fashion, after all…
