  1. FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK FOREVER AND EVER AD INFINITUM. There’s a cover version I think by KT Tunstall that cuts out the bits o’problematic language in the third verse too if people prefer.

    ‘Christmas In Prison’ by John Prine is a favorite, as is the Otis Redding ‘White Christmas’ from Love Actually because I’m a sentimental knob around the holidays. ‘Christmas In Hollis’ too, of course. And Vince Guaraldi.

    Anywho, great stuff, all. Laura, you’re the best for including Van Morrison.

  11. Rachel WOULD pick Elvis’ Blue Christmas.

    And that’s why she’s my favourite. Because that is the only Christmas song that I like. It must be a Rachel Thing.

      • He’s the only one who should ever sing that song, to be honest. It’s good to know I’m not the only one with those feelings. My girlfriend would rather listen to Justin Bieber sing it or whatever.

        • the bright eyes version and the she&him version both make me want to move to a cabin on top of a mountain where the only sounds i will ever have to hear are the birds chirping and the sound of my own blood slowly freezing in my veins

    (Seriously, I know too many Christmas songs. I usually start singing them on Dec. 1st and have enough to last me through the 31st. Oh, and then there’s the fact that I have the entire Nutcracker plus choreography memorized.)

    • Someone on tumblr did a “remix” of this, slowing it down to the tempo of the original Eartha Kitt version. I can’t find the post right now of course, but it is soooo much sexier than the released version, if you can imagine that.

  18. My friend is throwing a Christmas party this week and I am in charge of sound. (aka I’m bringing over my speakers and laptop.)
    We’re making it a trashy-on-purpose holiday fest, and I need some songs to that effect to mix in with all these Ke-dollarsign-ha remixes and trashy house anthems. So far all I have is Gaga’s “Christmas Tree.” Help me, Autostraddle!

  21. My dad interviewed Jose Feliciano when he was a journalist. It was in Tasmania on the stage of the playhouse many years ago. He said he was lovely. He told me the whole story the other day. That’s what I love about journalism. My dad interviewed people ranging from Jose Feliciano and Timothy Dalton (aka James Bond) to Yasser Arafat and Shimon Peres.

    – John Zorn has another good CD called “A Dreamer’s Christmas”

    …And I’m pretty sure a couple of other musicians also released new versions of Christmas songs but I can’t remember any of them because I either I didn’t like those covers or I didn’t really like the musicians :/
