Angel Haze Is The Newest Best Thing For Hip Hop

RACHEL’S TEAM PICK:

I first heard about Angel Haze through my current music obsession, Das Racist, because of the amazing remix she did of their track “Jungle Fever.” But then once I looked into her – um, whoa? This girl is amazing? She’s queer, Native American, a “self-described villain,” only 19 years old, and says she has crushes on both Tupac and Andrea Gibson. That would be way cool all on its own, but then she has to go and be an incredibly talented hip-hop artist. Want to see for yourself? Well you can! Because her free mixtape KING is available to download right now! While you’re looking into that, why not listen to her badass sample of Lil Wayne’s 6’7? You’re welcome.

  1. i’m confused. why does she keep identifying as native american but not make any tribal affiliation? typically, one does not continually describe themselves as “native american” without making a specific tribe reference, especially when it’s the singular race indicator. i’m not saying she doesn’t have the right to identify herself that way, but it’s something that gets appropriated a lot (i.e. i am 1/24 cherokee so i will tell everyone i am native american, i have a cherokee great great great grandmother indian princess, thus i am of native american heritage) and it’s also a way of describing a life experience, so the native community is always a little suspect of those who slap it on as a label. can anyone find online where she says what tribe she’s from? i’d love to know just to invite her to a pow wow :)

anyway, she is still really great. i am not usually into rap, but this is awesome!
