Cardi B Shuts Down “Queerbaiting” Claims by Reminding Everyone She’s Bisexual. Someone should definitely inform Cardi that “queerbaiting” isn’t a new word and has been around queer fandom for almost as long as there’s been fandom, but still points were made and I’m always here for Cardi B reminding people that she is in fact bisexual!

  1. I feel pretty 😒 about that “non-binary” Scandinavian skeleton story. The crux of it is that the dna remains showed Klinefelter syndrome, which would make the person intersex. Yeah, they had feminine dress and a masculine weapon, but the article equates their chromosomes with their gender expression, which is not particularly progressive.

  2. There’s been an odd rise in accusations of queerbaiting in recent years. There have been at least a few borderline cases which appear to be accidental, and at least one legitimate example of it (Captain Marvel), but most of the time it’s just kind of dumb. The Cardi B thing was so wrong it shouldn’t even have gotten noticed, and it only did because Rolling Stone really dropped the ball here.

    • Does Captain Marvel even technically count as queerbaiting? In my mind queerbaiting is when promotional material tries to make something look more gay than it is to draw in fans and/or exploits chemistry between same-sex characters to keep fans invested while never intended to pay off. Meanwhile I’d classify Captain Marvel under a different category of “Inexplicably No Homo” (or maybe Homo, but No Homo, lol), in that nothing really was promoted, but there was a clearly closeted story line (same-sex family, but no homo!) within the movie. It’s similarly frustrating, but for a different reason, because I didn’t go in expecting much but left frustrated at whatever was handcuffing the writers who clearly wanted to tell a same-sex story.

  3. *sigh* Guardian – while i appreciate the article, it’s exhausting that after decades of misrepresenting intersex people as transsexual (and vice versa) now the newest thing seems to be misnoming them as non binary.
The body in the grave is intersex. That’s a physical state of being. Non binary is a modern identity that is self chosen, and we know zero about this intersex person’s gender identity.
Don’t perpetuate intersex invisibility, appropriation and misrepresentation, please. It’s very harmful.
