As I spend almost every waking hour of my day, I was listening to a Philly soul playlist on Spotify when I thought to myself: “I wonder what 70s Diva I most energetically align with?” And so this quiz was born. We often romanticize the 70s for the music and the fashion — the two best parts about the decade. But could you really hack it as a badass babe in that era? This quiz is designed to tell you not who you want to be, but who you are spiritually. This might also get you acquainted with a diva you hadn’t heard of, and if it does, your homework is to get to know her by listening to her music immediately after you get the results.

You don’t have to be Black to take this quiz but you should know the results are going to be very Black.

  1. Loveee this. Got Aretha but wanna know all the other results too! Don’t know if she’s an option but I’ve been into Millie Jackson lately.

  2. Patti LaBelle! I think this is giving me inspiration for how I want to live the next phase of my life (especially the putting someone through a table part)

  3. Yesssssss, I love this! I will have an extra spring in my step today now that I know I am in fact Chaka Khan.

  4. I was hoping for Aretha but I got Dionne, another voice and diva I love and admire. This is brilliant. I would love to see a breakdown of the characteristics that make up each diva. I love this.

  5. You’re Aretha Franklin!

Never afraid to throw a little shade, but only when you feel slighted, people are often intimidated by you. And how could they not be? You’ve got talent that is beyond words. You’ve got a magnetism that has brought you success but also some trouble. You’ve defeated every weapon formed against you though and they know not to fuck with you.

Now that I know… I’ll let my inner Ree shine bright.

  6. I got Phyllis Hyman, who I had not heard of, so I followed Dani Janae’s advice and looked her up: wow she has a beautiful voice. Description is spot on, though, I definitely end up watching more than participating in life 😞

  7. Phyllis Hyman. Yeah, that sounds pretty accurate.

“wait around and wonder if she/he/they are into you until your crush is in a relationship with someone else”
I’m feeling personally called out by this choice.

  8. I got Chaka khan, my partner got Dionne Warwick, and a friend I forced to take it is Aretha. 3/3 on the descriptions—well done!

  9. Dionne! If ONLY I could have one billionth of her mastery of the Bacharach and David songbook. FWIW, in the 1970s Alicia Bridges was the one who rocked my little world.

    • Why I got Florence Ballard, what’s that suppose to mean?
I was hoping for Valerie Simpson….
