Yao Xiao

Yao Xiao is a China-born illustrator based in New York City. Yao Xiao creates artwork depicting a poetic visual world where complex concepts and human emotions are examined, amplified, and given physical form. Her work has helped people all over the globe connect at unique moments, from the celebration of the 20 Year Anniversary of the SXSW Interactive Festival, to the grand release of pop singer Katy Perry's single 'Dark Horse.' She has created deeply emotional and beautiful graphics for editorial print publications, pop music record covers, concert posters and book covers. Yao Xiao's serialized comic Baopu currently runs monthly on Autostraddle. It is an original comic exploring the nuances in searching for identities, connections and friendships through the fictional life of a young, queer emigrant. Baopu stands for 'holding simplicity,' a Taoist ideal of wishing to return to a simpler state. Find her on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Etsy or her website.

Yao has written 128 articles for us.

  1. I quit my horrible job yesterday and am reading this in bed. Probably time to get up and make things happen!

    • Congratulations on quitting a horrible job! I’m sure great success is in your future, now that you’ll have the time to pursue it instead of wasting time somewhere awful. <3

  2. this is so me every day except today i’m working on drawing with a newly injured index finger on my dominant hand x_x. thank you thank you for the inspiration!

    • Ditto! I would absolutely buy a poster of this from the Autostraddle store. *cough cough*

  3. I’m Native American and poor so this is so not me except, you know, the keratin and the pentatonic scale and the depression and the low-hanging face, in more ways than one, if you know what Iiiii mean

  4. This is SO relevant to my life. Me & my wife both plan to work from home this fall. My skills of getting my ass to my home office are pretty rad after almost 10 years of freelancing (I also worked from home during my studies), but hers…not so raffined yet.

Have to think about this (and Megan’s octopus-comic) every day. Thanks, Autostraddle.

  5. omg I need to learn this.. then I could actually work from home, instead of making a plan, followed by a long period of feeling guilty for not sticking to the plan….
