Playlist: Tour de Fat

This weekend, let’s dress up in costumes, ride bicycles in a parade, then drink beer while watching shows and circus acts and people dancing with bicycles. What about this doesn’t sound like the most awesome day of all time? It’s a legitimate deal and it’s called Tour de Fat.

Tour de Fat is hosted by New Belgium Brewing (you may know them if you like Fat Tire beer and really, who doesn’t like Fat Tire beer?) and started in my beautiful hometown of Fort Collins, Colorado in 1999. Since then, they’ve raised $2,000,000 for local cycling charities and have moved on to tour the country.

One of the best parts of Tour de Fat is the car trade-in deal. Do you have feelings about your carbon footprint? Well, you can assuage that Β guilt by volunteering to give New Belgium Brewery your car and promising to live car-free for one year in exchange for $2,250 to pay a local bicycle shop to build you the perfect commuter bicycle. Do you know what a sweet ride $2,250 could buy you? Seriously, that much money could invent a new kind of bicycle that massages your shoulders as you ride to work. I’m serious. The cars are auctioned off and the money goes towards local cycling charities.

If all that hasn’t all sold you, let me just mention one more tiny detail: Tour de Fat is a great place to meet ladies. Because who loves beer and bicycles more than lesbians? No one, that’s who.

To recap: You get to dress up in a silly costume, ride your bike, check out cute girls, drink beer and watch performances. What part of this doesn’t sound like the perfect day? Here’s when you can get in on the fun!

Fort Collins, CO – 9/1
Denver, CO – 9/8
Los Angeles, CA – 9/15
San Francisco, CA – 9/22
San Diego, CA – 9/29
Tempe, AZ – 10/6
Austin, TX – 10/20

I’ll be there this Saturday. I’m dressing as a Republican, though I’m having reservations about riding a bicycle in cowboy boots with baby dolls strapped to my hips.

In order to celebrate Tour de Fat and my intense love of beer and bicycles, here’s a playlist all about bicycles! Listen to this while you’re costuming up or to live vicariously through other Tour de Fat riders if you can’t attend this year.

  1. Apology Song was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this, I’m glad you included it!

  2. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Bicycle Song
Katie Melua – Nine Million Bicycles

This fest sounds like the best thing ever, wish I was in a country closer to all the fun. Enjoy!!!

  3. I miss Fat Tire. Can’t get it here in Jersey. Every Christmas my sister brings me two 12 packs from NC that she festively wraps, because she is both awesome and an ass. I have 4 months before my next fix. I will listen to this playlist and weep until then.

  4. Have fun this weekend! I’ll be working all weekend :( oh, and Hansen, are you saying cowboyboots are republican?! That’s offensive to cowboy boots.

  5. This is the most magical, wondrous thing I’ve seen. Those geniuses have combined my love of beer, bicycles, and costumes. There are zero words for what I’m feeling, you guys.

But why don’t I live in any of these places? :(

  6. So I moved to Hawaii from my hometown of Tempe, Arizona 5 years ago and Hawaii doesn’t sell New Belgium so I have to load my suitcase with beer whenever I go home to visit and it’s sad. BUT, I was looking at this and I realized that I will just so happen to be in Tempe on Oct. 6th for my lovely sister’s wedding the day before (she must have planned it like this because she loves me). I’m really excited right now.

  7. The Tempe date is the same day as the Rainbows Festival in downtown Phoenix. Bummer. Maybe I’ll take my bike to the queer festival. :)
