The 71-year-old has prided herself on being a hard worker coming from a humble background and being a champion for the people. But her lackluster campaign and her not-so perfect record as Dallas County Sheriff has dampened Texans’ enthusiasm for her as a candidate, including this queer Tejana.
Once the bill receives final chamber approval, SB6 will move forward to the House, which is dominated by Republicans but whose members are not as eager to take it up.
“I refuse to place myself in danger because it makes some fools at the Texas capital uncomfortable that girls like me exist publicly. I will not be limited to a sexual fantasy or some kind of untouchable position in society because I am a transgender woman.”
Ohio passed laws that bans abortion as early as 6 weeks after a heartbeat is detected and bans abortion after 20 weeks. Texas is making healthcare facilities bury or cremate fetal remains, which will probably increase abortion costs in the state.
More than twenty years since they were convicted of a horrific crime, a Texas criminal appeals court declared four Latina lesbians innocent and exonerated. The San Antonio Four’s exoneration serves as a ray of hope in these dark times and reminds us to continue to fight like hell for justice.
To add to the tragedy, when Loera was murdered, she was misgendered by the Austin Police and local media, something that happens far too often.
I can’t tell you about the head or what it has “notes” of. But I can tell you about some beers I really enjoyed, a few I didn’t, and the things that happened along the way.
“An entire year has passed since the shouts heard around the world reverberated throughout the Texas Capitol and forced the state legislature to come to a screeching halt. Rise Up/Levanta Texas formed in late June 2013 as a grassroots response to a growing awareness that our bodies, stories, and voices were being made invisible within the larger narrative surrounding reproductive rights and HB 2.”
The GOP is digging its heels into the sand as the tide turns. But hateful platform language and fist shaking will not stop the ocean. Texas is too big to smother with such small ideas.
These snacks are super unusual and will probably gross you out. But oh, they’re magic.
After our little trip to the big easy, we were ready to relax, get back on budget, and try some real Texas barbeque!
“HB2 outlaws abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, shuts down all but five abortion clinics in the state and tightens guidelines when it comes to abortion drugs. It’s a law that undoubtedly affects so many in the state: low-income, working class, people of color.”
A photo diary of Najva’s SXSW experience, in which she did (almost) everything wrong and still had a great time.
“We never ask young people what they are willing to sacrifice to make the world better and that’s one of the biggest problems in this country.”
Taylor and Kelsey’s whirlwind tour through Texas, replete with kittens, a delightful sex-worker named Rooster and the ballad of the naked woman with oars (who got away).
“My one note is, “God, I wish Tasha was a firefighter, so I didn’t have to feel conflicted about her.”
This was the way we found power over pain: Move.
In August, Book Riot published a list of the Best Books Set In Every State, and I thought to myself, as I so often do, “What if we did a list like this, but for queer women?”
“I also spent some time writing an intentionally awful Snape/Dobby/Giant Squid love triangle short story because sometimes you have to make your own fun.”
“Chester Bennington’s anger was so present and so empathic. It told me it was okay that I had it too— that I wasn’t alone, that my feelings were normal. It replaced my fear, and it helped me survive.”
RIP sweet girls.
