They took money from and colluded with evangelicals, used recycled homophobic tropes to attack trans people, and helped normalise this sort of rhetoric in the 21st century. JK Rowling’s Top Ten TERF Tropes essay has been cited by Republicans to support anti-gay laws.
Back in 2017, evangelicals openly announced they’d be using TERFs to help ‘separate the T from the rest of the alphabet’. They outlined a strategy to depict trans rights as “anti-feminist, hostile to minorities and even disrespectful to LGB individuals”, and thanks to the malice and stupidity of those involved in the disgusting ‘gender critical’ movement, they’ve been partly successful.
