COVER REVEAL: Check Out the Smokin’ Cover of Grace Lavery’s Much-Anticipated “Please Miss”

If you’re on the lookout for more hilarious, queer, and genre-bending memoir to add to your list, I have great news for you: Grace Lavery’s newest book will be out in 2022, and is available for pre-order now! Even better, we’re pleased to get to exclusively reveal the cover to you first, Autostraddle readers.

Please Miss is “a speculative memoir of gender transition and recovery from addiction, refracted through pop culture, queer theory, film, TV, literature, and (what feels like) stand-up comedy – like The Argonauts caught in a hall of mirrors, with a lot more sex and humor.” Carmen Maria Machado calls it “hilarious and sexy and terrifying in its brilliance,” while Michelle Tea says it’s a “daring, perverse, mind-blowing, intellectual, hilarious, outrageous, inspired work of art that somehow is touchingly sincere while giving no fucks whatsoever.” Torrey Peters, author of Detransition, Baby, says it “reframes the question of transition from the familiar journey from A to B, and replaces that journey with a can’t-look-away performance of wit, language, irreverence, and delight so compelling that a reader forgets about destinations all together.”

What does Grace Lavery, the author herself, have to say about Please Miss? Glad you asked:

I’m so excited to share PLEASE MISS with the world — I really wanted to see how far I could push the clever-girl transition memoir, and I think I’ve written something happy, horny, and smart. I’m hoping that people can read the book and learn new ways to think about their own desires, their own bodies, their own self-understanding: oh and I want people to have LOTS OF COMPLEX FEELINGS about clowns. There’s a pornographic description of finger limes that I hope Autostraddle readers will particularly enjoy — my editor says that’s the hottest part, but for me that title goes to a gangbang sequence at the end of a Doctor Who Christmas special fantasy… Ah well, everybody’s different I guess—anyway I’m just so jazzed to share this work with readers!

And while the full book will be available in February of 2022, today you can take an exclusive peek at the cover of Please, Miss in all its glory:

An image of the cover of Grace Lavery's book "Please Miss," which features a smiling pair of red lips that have been messily overdrawn with red lipstick in the style of clown makeup, and loosely holding a cigarette. In black scrawled type the title reads PLEASE MISS, and in smaller typewriter font "A heartbreaking work of staggering penis."

Please Miss is available for preorder now through Seal Press!
