  1. Thank you! These are pretty much the only events that I will tune into this Olympics (plus some fencing, I guess). I watched 5 women’s football games in a row on Wednesday night, lol.

Btw Alexandra Lacrabere is demolishing my poor Dutch right now.

  2. I am an Olympics junkie and am still hung over from my opening ceremonies party last night and you just MADE MY LIFE

  3. Thank you for this!

But hahaha the idea that only 2/12 women on the rugby 7s team are queer. That might be the number publicly out but that just seems… statistically unlikely.

  4. I appreciate this so much, I really do. I’m watching USA v. France soccer right now because of this article. But maybe you could update the headline to all out female athletes? It’s a little insensitive to erase the gay male athletes. They’ve got a rough enough time of it anyway.

  5. I did see a lot of coverage about LGBT Olympians but nobody mentioned Argentina’s women’s handball goalkeeper, Valentina Kogan. She’s even expecting twins with her partner, Carolina Rieger (not an Olympian) pretty soon.

  6. How did you miss all the Canadian athletes?
Stephanie Labbe (soocer), Marie-Eve Nault (soccer), Melissa Tancredi (soccer), Jen Kish (rugby).

Also apparently during the Austalia/Canada game, the crowd was openly jeering, and throwing homophobic slurs at Labbe. Today in the game against Zimbabwe Canada was audibly being booed when they scored or won possession. Definitely not impressed with Rio so far.

    • Thank you for this tip! Investigating/updating now.

I am so sad to hear that about that behavior from the crowd. :(

      • Ah, I put them on the later portion of the schedule, but missed the first game. Adding their names to Tuesday. Thank you!

    • Harris is an alternate, she’s in Brazil with the team but is not rostered and will only play if both Hope Solo and Alyssa Naeher are unavailable.

  7. I love smart, geeky girls but women athletes are so totally hot. And the female athletes in America are the greatest!

  8. Also, the last group game of women’s football will be on Aug. 9, which this article omitted.

Germany had a terrible game against Australia, though they somehow escaped with a totally undeserved point.

  9. Women’s soccer has more group games this Tuesday (the 9th) that aren’t on this schedule!

Also the out soccer players from Canada are Steph Labbe and her girlfriend (I believe) Marie-Eve Nault.

    • USA team played extremely well against NZ…hard for me to actually admit that coming from a NZER.But well fought.

      • Indeed. As a Brit I am really looking forward to tonight’s semi final. GB have played some great games but I’m sure NZ will be keen to kick our arses so it should be interesting!

  10. With the success of women’s soccer who are clearly better then the men, why not make the American pro Soccer league equal playing field for men and women. Imagine watching a game where it doesn’t matter your sex it matters what your skill is. How awesome would it be for women’s soccer to be recognized by being equal by having women play alongside the men in our national pro soccer league. We would no longer have to go to Europe or elsewhere to get our players. They could be all be Americans from American universities. American players who played for the home team in the Olympics. Think of how better the games would be. Think of the nationally televised games we could see because of it. Think of the sponsorships. Let’s face it even the sponsors would win. In the NFL or the NBA you have male dominated audiences with slightly more male commercials. But with equal men and women you could have both male and female oriented commercials. One break in the game could be from companies who target both men and women. Say for example Degree for men and women.

  11. Hey I did a little googling because I was curious and I can’t find anything about Dutee Chand being queer… do you mind providing sources?

  12. There have got to be more women on the rugby team who are queer. I ought to know because my ovaries exploded continually when I watched the USA/NZ game.
