Questions from the A+ Inbox were taking up such an enormous portion of the A+ Insider that we started dedicating an entire post to them instead! This A+ feature is now bi-monthly and advice questions go into our twice monthly Into the A+ Advice Box . We think this will be a lot of fun for the whole family. We’ve included as many questions as we can. We love you and your hair looks fantastic today!
MERCH, BUSINESS AND TECHNICAL CONCERNS
What’s the history of the name excitant group llc?
Riese: A long long time ago in 2008, I got an email from a fan who’d just discovered my blog and it said many things but one of the things it said was: “ The L world is amazing, well done, for me it rappresents [sic] freedom, love and friendship. On the other side,...
Oh I saw The Hours and it was INCREDIBLE. I teared up as it opened with a scene of just lesbian domestic life which, on an opera stage? OMG. Beyond that it is such a thoughtfully done exploration of mental anguish and the tenderest glimmers of hope that by the end I was sobbing. Opera allows the 3 stories to layer and speak to each other in ways that are really powerful. It is not a linear story but more like layers and spirals. Music, stage design, casting, all done with so much thoughtfulness. Such a powerful experience. It is not on stage now but The Met often shows up on PBS Great Performances so watch for it. It is worth it.
that sounds amazing!!
Nico – thank you for the thoughtful and transparent answer re the autumn gallery. I really appreciate AS continued concrete commitment to reflecting the rad ass community here and it’s really affirming to see as someone who often wondered when I first started reading here if I belonged. I’m happy to say I definitely feel included now and have felt more and more belonging over the years but it’s definitely been helped by how demonstrably and deliberately AS approaches gnarly things – like this!
Seconded!!!
I also thank Nico for their outlining, as well as for all of their and the rest of the team’s incredible work.
while obvs i don’t know how submissions looked like, i don’t get what could be considered a maleficent representation (ofc, trolls trying to convey their messages need to be excluded)
and how it would be excluding anybody if publishing a post where readers were invited to participate – and those who didn’t participate chose not to do so. if it skews the beautiful diversity inherent of the Autostraddle community when only a fraction of readers submits after multiple calls – it would just be that. it wouldn’t be harmful or isolating as it wouldn’t be Autostraddle excluding submissions, but folx choosing freely to contribute or not! that could be mentioned in a preface.
while it makes me feel pushed out and… not belonging.
Though wrt to lowering stakes and accessibility it might indeed be worth considering what may have kept folx from contributing.
f.ex. i appreciated the reminder for the call, because i had forgotten abt the submission and it got me to work on it as a silver lining in a trying time. idk if another “reminder: inbox closes overmorrow” could have been helpful for folx struggeling with procrastination.
Also, the requirements for the alt-text were really daunting. idk if sth could have taken off the edge of the task, or if maybe a motivational info were helpful, along the lines of “x% of our readers use a screenreader, please provide alt-text to make your contribution accessible to them – bonus: you can mutually enjoy the gem of your descriptions :) “.
Ophelia, respectfully, after giving this multiple days of thought and discussion, Nico and I came to a different conclusion. We have to do what we believe is the best for our entire community as a whole, even when it involves making tough calls that we know will disappoint some people. That’s what happened here.
I am sorry we weren’t able to publish your photo (and the photos of those other A+ members who did submit!), but the gallery overall did not meet our inclusion standards for publication — which is a standard we hold ourselves to both in front of and behind the paywall, because it matters that what we show reflect the great breadth of who we are. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, it happens that we can’t meet those goals. It doesn’t mean anyone did anything wrong, it just means that this wasn’t the right time or the right piece for us and for what we need to be able to do with it.
We also don’t want to make a habit of asking members to submit content or photos and not be able to publish it! So we are rethinking how we can do calls like that in the future so that it has a more satisfying conclusion. We’re also trying new things all the time! This is the largest our A+ membership has ever been, and we want to find all kinds of new ways to build connections and help foster that community! Sometimes experiments don’t pan out as we planned, but we learn and grow from those experiences so that we can best serve all of you the next time. And the time after that.
I’m really excited to see what we cook up for 2023!
person in Boston: I moved from a smaller city to a Big Gay City with more gay ppl than the entire population of my previous home. I can relate to being like ‘where are the literal tens of thousands of queers i saw on the wikipedia page?’ i do SEE them out and about but its not like ‘OMG HI i see your rainbow bracelet/blazer/haircut pls come to our weekly queer meetup’ bc they don’t need each other as much? they are more finely sorted. Because there are so many queers, the key is finding SUBGROUPS. there is a queer salsa group for example. a bike coop i think is very gay. a qwoc artist market. a qpoc hosted event in the city wide art extravaganza. also i have found queers by queer friends of queer friends referrals which may or may not be an option for you. i promise you will find them. in my experience it takes couple yrs, AT MINIMUM with effort, in a new place to find your ppl. it’s tiring and lonely so be kind to yourself on the journey!!
also, i went to a gardening group SEVERAL times and slowly realized the person leading it and a couple ppl there were gay. it’s very NBD which, for this midwestern 90s kid, is such a trip.
Co-signing the big city subgroup idea. Boston has a ton of gay sports leagues/groups (flag football, basketball, rock climbing, etc). There’s also lots of non sport options if that’s not your thing.
I’ve found that wearing Autostraddle or other gay gear helps me find queer folk in non gay specific spaces too, like at work or just out and about. It doesn’t always lead to friendship, but it can still feel nice to be wearing a “Who All’s Gay Here” shirt and have a random person on the bus make eye contact, point to the shirt, and raise their hand 😂 🌈
Oh my goodness! That is so cute!
Yes, totally! I always forget that gay/queer sports leagues are a thing, but they can range from serious to pretty darn casual. Also seconding the wearing of merch!
OMFG! That vintage automated bed ad!
Truly what is happening there.
“Also, the way discord works, invites expire after, usually, about 7 days so I don’t know if a compendium would really work”
if you go into invite settings on discord, you can set them to never expire. but also at that point you run the risk of the links getting shared elsewhere or spambots, so maybe no
Yeah, I have to also assume the links expire for a reason and that the moderators of each individual server share them at their discretion.
I just wanted to thank you all for running the 13 Days of A+ discord server! 💫 (Also for all the A+ content this month!) I’m sure it’s a lot of work on top of the *a lot of work* you are all doing already, and I just want you to know how FUN the discord was and how it felt so nice to have a little place to connect with gay ppl inside my phone during the holidays! 😅
It was work, but so worth it! I had a lot of fun, too, especially as someone who spent the holigays quietly with my partner :) trying to shake off that depression lethargy. I truly treasure hanging with you all.
re: site redesign at some point… for some reason my browser never prompts me with a remembered password/username for this site, even though I’ve saved it. I think it might have to do with the login box? this is the world’s smallest thing but I’ve often too lazy to look up my password to put it in, and usually don’t bother unless I specifically want to read/comment on something A+. I don’t know if this is something y’all can even control, but it is a tiny suggestion if it is fixable at some point!
also thanks to whoever recommended Fanchromatic nails! they had Killing Eve themed polishes, and I had no willpower to resist purchasing them
I’m in DC and my friends run a queer bookclub!
I absolutely needed to see that Gabby Williams photo, thank you.
Also re The Hours, keep an eye out if your local cinema screens Met HD. They do encore things from time to time. (This was the first broadcast I went to after spending lockdown watching scads of Met operas, & it was a m a z i n g.)
Also also I submitted to the autumn gallery, and if the result of the photo call was just a handful of folks who look like me, that for sure isn’t representative & I think I would’ve been sad to see it. So thanks for making that tough decision!
I also submitted to the gallery and I feel exactly the same way. I too appreciate the decision not to run it.
“Don’t Marry ‘Em Til You Can See the Whites of Their Eyes” 🤣🤣🤣
*happy sigh* I needed that.
And Nico’s whole take on those straight dating shows–it mirrors my own!

Andy, what is your icon? It looks like a baby chick peeking out from behind a dandelion puff. Or a pale ferret. Or a baby duckling or gosling. Please clarify.
