by Riese and Laneia
Due to a bizarre coincidence, both of us are going to be “camping” this weekend. Laneia’s already gone, in fact, and has likely been foraging for fruits and berries and killing rabid boars in the wide open spaces of Arizona USA since early Wednesday morning. Riese will be traipsing about the wild waters of California for approximately 48 hours, beginning later today.
Obviously this means the entire team is planning a serious kegger for Saturday when the bosses are gone and Rachel’s in charge, but it also means that we need a playlist to commemorate this fine occasion.
Typically this list would be hippie-with-guitar-at-a-campfire-focused, but apparently there are no campfires allowed where Riese is going and she’s too upset about this to think about it, even if it is somehow related to preventing mass wildfires.
Is it a stereotype that lesbians like to camp? Yes. Is it a stereotype for a reason? Yes. Now, not all of us like bugs/dirt/the absence of indoor plumping — but statistically a lot of us do, whether it’s at Bonnaroo or The Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival or a Journey to Dump Dana’s ashes in a magical waterfall.
In general we like nature, s’mores and being self-sufficient. Camping combines all of those things plus you have the opportunity to utilize ALL of the pockets in your cargo shorts.

Creedence Clearwater Revival. Mhmm.
I may possibly be going camping in the next few weeks, so this appropriate.
*this is
Argh.
Oh definitely!
BEST. PLAYLIST. EVER.
I feel like “She’s only happy in the sun” should be followed directly by “I’m only happy when it rains” by Garbage. :)
Do you live in my brain? This is the playlist to my LIFE.
Is Autostraddle on Spotify? That could be amazing, right? I love it when you guys make playlists.
Downside? Apparently the Eagle’s catalog isn’t on there yet :( Still, here’s this: http://bit.ly/o4vOPx
thanks for this!
some of the other playlists are on this 8tracks thingy.. i may or may not have been playing http://8tracks.com/autostraddle/chill-songs-for-hot-days non-stop
oh em gee i want this but apparently i need an invite.. sadface.
This + copious amounts of alcohol may just save my life considering I’m camping under a heat advisory with ~30-40 strais for a combined bachelor/bachelorette party weekend beginning this evening… I have no other words. The words are gone.
you poor innocent being. Is there at least wifi on the campsite?
Definitely not. There’s only a covered cement slab… an army grade, barracks-style tent… and canoe/raft situations… It’ll be like True Life: I’m Entering the Wilderness. Where’s Bear Grylls? (Too many teevee references? Yes, that.)
NO CAMPFIRES?!?! God damn it. That’s so hateful.
IKRWTF
camping almost seems pointless without a campfire…
:(
Just added the entire playlist to my library :)
I like sprinkling a little of jack johnson, kris kristopherson, and the dodos (especially from beware of the maniacs) in my camp playlist. yours is solid so far, love it!
I find it difficult to even go outdoors without listening to Wagon Wheel.
I’m not sure where I can go camping in my new city, so maybe I’ll just make a fort in my living room and listen to music and make microwave smores. who wants to join?
your camping is my style of camping
Jinx.
Is there an Autostraddle room on turntable.fm yet? Because if not, it needs to happen. STAT.
This playlist is SO GOOD and so relevent to my interests right now. Wagon Wheel is my jam, I play it almost every time I pick up an instrument.
I’m also camping this weekend! And then, in 9 DAYS (!!!!!), I’m heading to Michigan Womyn’s Fest! If there are any ‘straddlers going, we should meet up! I’m on the crew so I might be working super hard but that’s all the more reason to party extra extra hard!
“Through the Roof ‘n’ Underground” by Gogol Bordello
While that may not seem like campfire material on the surface, anyone who’s seen Wristcutters: A Love Story can tell you it’s perfect road trip/sing-a-long music.
love this song and lovethis movie. i kind of wish eugine hutz was inthe movie though
Yes! Even a little cameo would have been awesome. Have you seen the ‘Pied Piper of Hutzovena’ documentary?
i haven’t but now i feel that i need to now. it’s on hulu and i guess i just found how to spend my saturday morning haha
Excellent playlist. When it’s time to hit the road and get back to my mountain home, this is the first song I play:

(you can ignore the video, but check the audio)

Emmylou!!:D
I loved this playlist so much i made it in spotify: http://open.spotify.com/user/holine/playlist/2sMgor4loyMqvqXlr7MmO9
This is so timely for me. Next week I am going to be camping at a music festival and so far my to do list consists of: buy whiskey and canteen.
I seriously have about 3/4 of these songs on my pre-existing camping playlist. By “camping,” I actually mean “road tripping without enough money to sleep in real beds so we sleep in the woods instead,” but that’s basically the same thing.
Is there like, a lesbian collective unconscious or something?
Yes, there is. I think it might have taken up residence on this website.
So is the “lesbian collective unconscious” the best kind of collective unconscious, or the best kind of lesbian collective? I can’t decide.
definetly ccr. garth brooks ((yeah yeah i know but seriously its old school)). the doors. the eagles. and johnny cash.
also smores made with reese’s peanut butter cups!!
