Sometimes letting a person be hot and funny and wear great outfits is all the politics you need.

Whether you’re a lesbian who dated men as a teen or a queer person who dates lots of genders, our community is far too mixed and gender is far too complicated to leave men — cis and trans — out of our discussions.

Bringing someone home to meet your parents is such a trope it’s become an entire genre of movie. But for many queer people there are two families to introduce to a partner: given and chosen. And sometimes the chosen family is scarier.

Some movies are so powerful, you don’t even have to see them. It’s enough to steal a furtive glance at two older girls with pierced tongues on a DVD cover at your local Blockbuster.

If queer creators are so worried about backlash from the community that we begin to self-censor, then the only interesting queer work will be made by straight people.

Over the past couple weeks, I’ve watched forty features and the first two episodes of a TV show. Yes, forty. Consider this list a reference, a collection of short reviews for the rest of the year’s buzzed about films and films that should be buzzed about.
