Really Papi? L Word Down Under Convention Canceled, Slow Ticket Sales Blamed

carrideL WORD: We had press passes, goddammit, to provide our snarky commentary and observe the greatest most ridiculous fandom extravaganza of all time!! Also I heard Papi was gonna be there. But ALAS, The L Word Down Under convention, which has been in the works for over a year now, has been canceled. The following notice was issued on the event’s website:

Dear L Word Down Under Convention Ticket Purchasers.

Due to the lack of tickets sales for the L Word Down Under Convention, United L Events Inc. is regrettably cancelling the event.

Please note that all ticket purchasers will be processed within 5 days of the cancellation, (excluding booking fees) and according to the terms and conditions on the website.

For any enquiries please contact info@thelworddownunder.com

The convention was scheduled for Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of January 2010 in Sydney, Australia at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre. Leisha Hailey was a confirmed guest but recently backed out — other confirmed guests included Marlee Matlin (Jodi), Rachel Shelley (Helena), Laurel Holloman (Tina), Anne Ramsay (she played Jenny’s ex-girlfriend Robin) and Rose Rollins (Tasha). U.S Comedian Poppy Champlin would have been MC-ing the whole weekend.

According to The L Word Online, premium tickets ($450) and early bird tickets ($325) were already sold out, but I guess those general admissions tickets were not. Really sucks for people with non-refundable airline tickets to Australia! I blame Ilene Chaiken.

Back in September United Events CEO announced: “This will be the biggest L Word Convention ever to be held and United L Events Inc. has now secured 8 of the main actors of the show. With all the platinum tickets now sold out, the gold reserved tickets are selling fast.”

What happened?

LAMDA: Tonight, Living Lambda is having a benefit for marriage equality and LGBT rights at Stonewall Inn. Doors open at 6:30, and they suggest a $5 donation. DJ Carlytron is doing the music!

LADY GAGA: Was on Jay Leno last night:

Here’s her performance of Bad Romance:

And her epic interview, among other topics she talks about how she wanted to be different in high school:

She was also on FUSE TV last night, and she talked about her bisexuality. When asked if she felt it was not given proper due and thought of as a sensationalized move she just exploited for attention she responded that she thinks her “gay fans get it” and know that she’s genuine.

Also, totally exciting: her entire interview on POPLAB (on Logo) is up!

ALERT: Lady Gaga will be on Ellen THIS FRIDAY. Please go mark your calendars now. I predict this will be the greatest thing to happen to daytime TV since Ellen was on Oprah, which was not that long ago, but still.

CINEMATIC MISOGYNY: A top 7 list of chick flicks that don’t only carry subtle patriarchal undertones but downright hate women. Secretly. (@cracked)

HOT GAY LADIES: AfterEllen appreciates the Hot Hollywood list for going a little gay: “I can’t find proof that this is the first time the GF o’ the year has been a lesbian (Arizona, not Jessica), but I think it’s a safe bet. And awesome.” Giant photos after the jump! (@afterellen)

  1. I know! Im so upset that this convention has had to be cancelled also. It was shaping up to be a HUGE event. Shame more lesbians dont have more money, then they could have all bought tickets to come…

  2. I second this feeling. I haven’t felt this let down since that time when Green Day released their ‘superhits’ compilation. I’m going to throw a pity party on that weekend instead, you and Papi are invited.

  3. Can’t help but say this series is sensational.
The actors are so liberating they give u a real sence of there relationships they are all so complex. I absolutly love all the girls.
Yes, i am a man and baring the lesbianism in this series the writers and story lines should get academy awards. I truly believe this is the greatest thing on tv please dont stop.
    Big Big Big Fan!
