What’s Your Interior Design Aesthetic?

Just moved into a new apartment? Done with your old look and ready to start over? Maybe you just got a promotion and want to actually, you know, design your interior rather than just kind of take whatever you can get? Ready to put everything you learned during Spaces & Places into action?

Don’t think too hard — just pick the one that seems to speak to you. And the quiz will tell you what kind of aesthetic you should go for – and a little bit about what that says about you!

What's Your Interior Design Aesthetic?

Which of these is your ideal first date?
Which coffee table book do you want?
What's your favorite TV show?
Which of these objects do you HAVE to have in your home?
Which beverage do you prefer?
Which of these mugs/cups should your chosen beverage (or any other) go in?
Which little linework tattoo would you get?
Which lamp appeals to you the most?
In which of these chairs would you most like to sit?
Which bookshelf should hold all of your books?

  1. Mid-century modern!

100% accurate as have spent the last few months filling my new place with mid century stuff off eBay!

    • Yay :) eBay has great mid-century pieces and a lot of my friends have found beautiful pieces on FB Marketplace but I’ve had no luck. I guess it really depends on where you live.

  2. Art Deco! I feel I’m a mashup of this and cottage core (or an equivalent cozy aesthetic) though – right on with the colours and the busyness, but not as Perfect as art deco often is. A great quiz! I’m obsessed with the leopard lamp

  3. I got Danish Pastel, which I have never heard of, BUT I’m 90% I already saved the image from the result on Pinterest, so it tracks.

    • I had never heard of Danish Pastel until last year at the height of the pandemic when I decided to download tiktok. I kept seeing really pretty white interiors mixed with pastel accents and didn’t know what it was until I saw a comment on someone’s video mentioning the design name. Now it’s my favorite!

  4. To the surprise of no one I got cottagecore. I’m a lesbian cliché. I was knitting socks before I took this test and I’m going to bake a pie later.

  5. 1000% accurate (cottagecore). also have you seen Together Together? bc it features that colorstrology book as a plot point, and also because I heard ‘Which of these objects do you HAVE to have in your home?” in the voice of julio torres who plays the coworker/friend who asks questions like this in Together Together.

    • I had never heard of that movie but adding it to my list since it’s on Hulu and Tig’s in it :)

  6. I got cottagecore, which is 100% me. I love cottagecore so much, I’m so happy I have finally found an aesthetic that reflects my style and that is apparently en vogue. I really recommend watching that lengthy youtube video on why cottagecore is gay! Also, the cats or women book question had me thinking for a solid five minutes as a queer crazy cat person (I chose cats)

  7. I have no idea how my answers led to eco sustainable, but the description fits my aesthetic to a tee.

  8. I got Eco-Sustainable which is so right it hurts.

No joke, I once thrifted 12 baskets in one week. The people at the consignment store started calling me “the basket lady” and asking what I was doing with all of these baskets. I wished it was some amazing installment art project, but really I just refuse on principle to buy plastic crates to hold all my crap, but I’m still an obsessive organizer.

  9. I got cottagecore, which is probably the closest this quiz could get to my actual aesthetic of “very old and durable, mostly wood, chosen for comfort and longevity” aka the house of some family friends I knew growing up

  10. Contemporary!

“You like clean, curved lines, open spaces, and styles that are not trendy.”

The not trendy part is definitely true.

  11. Mid Century Modern which is true. Hard core lover of Lloyd Wright, Ray Kappe, Schindler and Neutra. Also gardening which is chaotic, creative, has no underlying theme but looks wonderful.

  12. for some reason, i was really expecting the IKEA bisexual couch to be amongst the seating options

  13. I am moving to a new place soon, and this quiz helped me define my personal style better which will be really useful when I’m decorating! Thank you so much Lucia!

  14. I love that there are now so many books, Pinterest and other blogs that can help you find great interior design ideas. Also, there are sites like https://clubcoolio.com/ where you can find some things for your interior that will help improve it.
