No Filter: Samira Wiley’s Smile Is Here to Save You From the Handmaid’s Tale Season Two

Welcome back to No Filter, a once-weekly foray into the fascinating world of queer celebrity social media and the nerds who love them. This week, I want to take a moment to be grateful for the fact that we do not have to cover straight people in this column because they’re busy shaming Jennifer Aniston ONCE AGAIN:

This is honestly so terrible it’s amazing?!?!?!

Thought we’d just get this out of the way riiiiight now.

In my imagination, Lauren Jauregui is writing an acrostic poem about Hayley Kiyoko’s shirt.

I’m so happy my imaginary girlfriend Kehlani enjoyed the surprise birthday party I had nothing to do with.

I am so annoyed that Cara and Paris seem to have made an informed decision to chill on each other on social media. Here’s Cara with some people who are not Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris Jackson. What a waste.

Normally, I don’t use professionally-shot things like this photo shoot behind-the-scenes video for No Filter but I think we can all agree that this video belongs here.

Ditto this incredible footage of Stephanie Beatriz, which I can only caption with “Oh hello, didn’t see you there.”

In thumbnail form I thought Cameron and Rhea’s faces were affixed to a pair of swinging saloon doors, which come to think of it is a great idea.

Demi Lovato just wants you to relax.

Your pal Gaby Dunn, hard at work in front of her Instagram wall.

Samira Wiley’s cute selfie smile is honestly the only thing that would make me feel better after a Handmaid’s Tale marathon.

  1. Brad and Jen finalllllllyyyyy getting the attention they deserve in this friggen column, STEF. Post-2005 Brad and Jen may have just been a series of missed connections. “You said you wanted to meet in midtown!!!!” “No, I said uptown. AND I’M ALREADY ON THE JET, BRAD!!!”

  2. I could have watched that Stephanie Beatriz video all day, but I got distracted by a text. Also a heads-up that it was going to be nsfw-ish cause that Hayley image wow.

  3. This week in No Filter: Women’s Soccer edition

Kailen Sheridan and her housemate got a foster dog from Loveafoster! Tbh, I was most upset about Kerr and Stanton’s trade to Chicago because it meant they wouldn’t be fostering any more dogs there, and that place always had the Instagram goods on their soccer foster mamas. Prior to this new foster dog, Sheridan visited her family in Canada with her girlfriend. I still haven’t recovered from Sheridan losing out on save of the week two weeks ago, when she blocked a PK AND the follow-up.

Steph Labbe and her partner Georgia Simmerling are buying a house! Labbe used to play for the Washington Spirit but now plays on a men’s semipro team as well as for Canada’s national team. Her girlfriend is an Olympian who recently broke both legs right before her competition 🙁

Sam Kerr is really happy to be back, as her Instagram stories are just different photos of Nikki Stanton, usually with their new foster dog Piper. Adopt her (Piper) if you live in Chicago! Kerr and Stanton played together in Chicago for the first time last weekend, with both of them starting against the Washington Spirit.

Ashlyn Harris has a new goddaughter, and she and Ali Krieger continue to win the title of “Aunties of the Decade,” especially in regards to Cassius Dwyer. If you haven’t already seen it, watch Krieger win “Honorary Save of the Week” for her clutch Cassius catch.

Rachel Daly and Kristie Mewis went to the zoo. Hopefully Kyah Simon’s (alleged ex of Alanna Kennedy) arrival this week will help the Dash get started scoring.

The Pride got even gayer (allegedly) as a boatload of (alleged) lady-loving ladies came back from international duty. Marta, Poliana, Emily van Egmond, and Alanna Kennedy are here! (no verification on Monica, if you’ve got the knowledge let me know). van Egmond’s likely girlfriend is Spirit mainstay Tori Huster. Huster deleted her Instagram but van Egmond’s got plenty of cute photos of them together from the most recent W-League season.

Mackenzie Arnold joined Jamia Fields (former Orlando Pride) in Norway, where they will play together this season. She and Pickett are still at it with the reciprocal heart eyes on each others’ photos.

Kristen Hamilton scored her first goal of the season, and had a sweet moment wrapped up by girlfriend Abby Erceg. Erceg also had unusually adorable Instagram stories all week of K-Ham.

Bianca Sierra and Stephany Mayor’s Thor/Ka were champions of Champions Cup (I think). Sierra and Mayor are a super sweet couple, both from Mexico, who have been very publicly out for a long time. There are in-depth articles on their relationship, the homophobia they faced playing for the Mexican national team under Leonardo Cuellar but rejoined the team under new management. They live in Iceland together and are thought to be the first publicly gay athletes in Mexican history.

Mandy Laddish was feeling down about her surgery and being out of commission for so long, but her friends reminded her she’s lucky to have Becca Moros (who started for the Royals this weekend after missing last weekend with an injury).
