33 Women Music Critics You Must Read

In acknowledgment of the fact that music journalism is still a bit of a brodeo, Flavorwire.com has put forward their list of 33 Women Music Critics You Must Read.

They’ve highlighted some outstanding music critics who deserve our attention, including but not limited to Donna Gaines, Jeanne Fury, Sara Marcus, Amy Phillips and Jaan Uhelszki. By the author’s own admission, not every great critic shows up on this list. Still, it’s extensive enough to point us towards careers worth of compelling music journalism and also to help educate anyone whose knowledge of the profession stops at Lester Bangs.

  1. Y HALO THAR, DAPHNE BROOKS! She reminds me of someone I knew (and crushed on) in grad school. And yes, I’m just shallow enough to start reading her stuff because of that. Luckily, she sounds awesome! An article on Josephine Baker? Yes, please!

Thanks for this list! I find the older I get, the less patience I have for dude-writers and he-hipsters. Not male writers, but that boys club bullshit. Know what I mean? A lot of music writing seems to be in that category. Now I have a list of ladies to check out for a change of pace!

  2. thanks for sharing this!
    all this ladies are awesome!
jeanne fury volunteered her time for willie mae rock camp for girls last year, so in addition to being a really great music critic, she’s awesome as a person, too.
