From packing to arrivals and back home again, we’ve all got our own way of doing things. In this roundtable, some of Autostraddle’s finest editors share theirs.

“Start-up culture is odd. There’s a lot that I struggle with — it’s not something particularly designed for anyone who isn’t already privileged. It’s hard to go into it without a safety net. There’s a certain element of romanticizing struggle that is hard to internalize as a woman, a queer woman, and/or a woman of color. “

This is my unique perspective on being a half-black, half-white human who sometimes feels uncomfortable using the term Person of Colour to refer to myself.

This week on The Real L Word, I took a long nap, Kiyomi drank too much, Whitney popped the question and Amanda inhaled toxic paint fumes.

“I wanted to stay there forever and start from scratch. I wanted us to go back and live like these people did because it was just so much cooler. Everyone around me was shifting — people got a little quieter, some slowly broke from their group to sit on the hill, and some people walked to the center of the field and just stood motionless. I think it also helped that a few hundred feet away stood Mount Olympus. You guys, History!!

Tegan Quin chats with Autostraddle about the latest Tegan and Sara projects.

“Christina is, energetically, equal parts over-the-top gay man and elder straight woman.”

“In the past few years, we’ve been seeing queer people in film outside of trauma and pain. We’re seeing folks who can be terrible, romantic, sweet, murderous — and who also just happen to be queer.”

People love other people’s mess; it gives us the opportunity to not dwell on the dysfunction in our own lives. 

“When I say it’s comforting I mean it’s comforting in the omg this is so painful and beautiful and I love art and I love being trans and I want to die and aghhafsdghslakjnci sort of way.”

Carly: I feel like if I confusedly kissed Jennifer Beals, I would also have to move away.
Christina: I would have to join WITSEC. I would be like, “Listen, get me on a USA cable drama because I got to go. I’m losing it.”
Carly: “I got to go. Give me a wacky sidekick, we can go fight crime together, or whatever. Maybe we’re lawyers. We’re going to wear suits and my name is not Carly anymore.”
Christina: “I can’t be Christina anymore because my mouth has been on Jennifer Beals’ mouth.”

“Womp, womp, womp. It’s the new Shane theme song. It used to be a gnarly guitar riff and now it’s a sad trombone.”

“A cultural exchange from a person with a prostate to those without.”

And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives…

Disabled people deserve to know, from our school days, that we’re not just cases, diagnoses, or “not really disabled”; we’re part of a community with its own histories and triumphs.

“It was like throwing a tennis ball at a wall and expecting it to bounce back but against all odds it gets stuck in the bricks.”
