Quiz: Which Endlessly Dramatic “Gentleman Jack” Gay Are You?

Gentleman Jack just aired its season two finale in the UK and is lesbian speed-walking toward the last two episodes here in the US ā€” and you know what that means: It’s quiz time! Because what is the point of TV if not to project yourself and your life onto your favorite characters as you over-identify with all their shenanigans.

Gentleman Jackheads will probably want to wallop me for including Queen Marie here and not Maria Barlow, Anne’s real life tryst, but, you have to admit we only get one mention of Ms. Barlow in season one, and one very quick smashcut that’s super NSFW. I can’t put boobs in a feature image! Queen Marie may not have been in love with Anne in real life, but she was absolutely gay for her on the show and you’ll never convince me otherwise! And Vere Hobart too!

  1. The best quiz ever!

Happy that I am the OG GJ, Anne Lister herself!

Also thank you for including PG Tips which is infinitely better than all posh tea.

ALSO, I was possibly slightly disappointed that brandy was not a medicinal option (so I opted for the rum), but then it seems like there have been fewer brandy mentions in season 2? Seriously, there were so many that my wife + I had a brandy drinking game in the S1 finale.

    • I was coming to the comments section to say the exact opposite thing about PG tips. I think the cultural significance/unwavering brand loyalty of different brands of tea have not been considered in this quiz – to the point where I couldn’t bring myself to pick PG tips, though I couldn’t pick any of the Not Really Tea options either, so was cruelly excluded from participating in the quiz and discovering which brand of 19th century lesbian I am.

  2. Miss Sophie Ferrall, interesting! Never thought of myself that way, but I guess did I move across my country to be gay, so…

And question number one was my type of question, and definitely took the longest.

Maybe I need a quiz for what fountain pen am I?

(Side note, I adore my new iridescent Kaweco.)

  3. I also cannot remember who Vera Hobart is but the description is kinda scarily spot on? šŸ˜… I feel like I should put it on a dating app, but I’m not sure if it’s a bit pathetic or not that I did this quiz lol

“You can come off as stoic, shy, and reserved to the wider world, but to the people who know you best, you have a passion for life, a wicked sense of humor, and even a penchant for a little bit of mischief. You care what other people think, and why is that always presented like it’s a bad thing? Perception is reality! You’re a loyal companion, not easily attached, but once you give yourself over to someone, you’ll always hold them in your heart.”

  4. Anne Lister – clearly Anne and I did indeed share many preferences in that quiz!
One thing I would like to point out, Yorkshire Gold Tea is the hands down favorite of Lister Lesbians.
Having visited the rich and varied sites of Anneā€™s love life in York – its fair to say
Ms Lister may well have liked her tea like her ladies, rich, slightly exotic, very invigorating.
As she was loyal to the hometown ladies, I would expect her to be loyal to the very excellent hometown brew.
