Dear Dreamers,
Howdy. How are you? This week, among other things, I renewed my fishing license, went on a date at the cat cafe, and logged several hours in Canva. Today, I’ll go see one of the conservation buffalo herds and stretch my legs out in the sun…
Oh, also, I watched the entire Insidious franchise in the span of just a few days. And let me tell you, it’s made me a little jumpy, even with repeated exposure. There is nothing like October (and the thinning of the veil that comes with it) to remind me that fear, the experience of it, is a tool in my/our collective arsenal. As a child, besieged by visions and apparitions I did not understand, fear was the undercurrent of many of my days. I didn’t understand how to hone it, to know exactly where it was in my body and use it for something outside of myself. Now I do, of course. I’ve learned a lot of lessons in the meantime.
Which is why, even though the world has its own distinct terrors, this month I’d like to focus on the darker side of dreams, and of mysticism. I’d like to use the wisdom I’ve gleaned to help some of the more painful interpretations, nightmares, and hard questions seem a little easier.
Sending you good dreams,
Cowboy
Tarot Question of the Week
How do I make peace with ending something I want to be over, even though my mind keeps reminding me of it?
– Fish
Dear Fish,
Thank you for the gift of your question. I am no stranger to recurring thoughts, especially ones that come when we least appreciate them. Your query is not an easy one to answer, but it is a worthwhile one. The truism that time heals all wounds is, in its way, an answer, but what about those things that never leave us? That circle around us again again. The themes that pop up in our work. The love we didn’t get away from.
Well, for those things, peace is not easily had. It can be helped along by meditation, ritual, and intention, of course, but my advice in general, is to lean in. Do not shy away from the ghosts. Talk to them. Let them come closer. Ignoring them and pushing them away does nothing but prolong the issue. This is a lesson I learned early, and now I will give it to you.
And Fish (awesome name by the way), for your specific case, I pulled THE SUN, reaffirming to me not only that new joys are ahead for you, but that your specific attention to the thing you want to be over will help remove its novelty, and thus help banish it from you.
Plus, when in doubt, a cord cutting ceremony is always an option. More on that next week.
See you on the Other Side,
CC

Common Nightmare Images and What They Mean
Broken Bone: Bones are strength, the ability to carry one’s own weight, propel themselves forward. The most vital parts of ourselves. If your bones are broken in Dreamland, you must trace the issue back to the root — there you will find the answer.
Tornadoes: Something that you can’t track. An act of God. Destruction and rebirth. A reorienting tragedy. What has come out of left field for you? What might make you different?
Dark Skies: Something you know is coming. Bad feelings about ruined plans. Your anxiety, in this case, is not unwarranted. Remember that protecting yourself is not always the right option but, in this case, it is.
Doppelgängers: How far are you willing to stray from yourself? If in a romantic relationship, something has to give. Imperfection can be acknowledged, but stay away from cruelty. Mirror images. The worst thing you’ve ever said to another person that actually applies to you coming back to haunt you. Apologize correctly.
Familiar Places: You can make a new kind of home, it is allowed and encouraged! Sometimes not answering your mother’s phone calls is an act of self care. Why does the domestic frighten you? It’s time to start journaling again. Take a different path to work, just for the sake of it. Pay attention to the little things. Write them all down like a map.
