Now Hiring: Trans Subject Editor for Autostraddle.com

Position: Trans Subject Editor, Autostraddle.com

Classification: Part-time

Location: Inside the U.S.; many current editors are located in L.A. but remote from anywhere in the US is ok!

Autostraddle is looking for a dedicated part-time editor devoted to members of the trans community who both read and write for the magazine. We’re looking for someone who is interested in facilitating content and a sense of community for a diverse and growing readership, as well as taking some leadership as far as prioritizing the experience and needs of queer trans people of color in this digital community. We’re also very aware that the compensation we can offer doesn’t amount to a full-time job, and are committed to actively working to build a set of day to day job responsibilities that are sustainable and rewarding for the candidate we choose!

Responsibilities include:

+ Working with our current trans and nonbinary writers to conceptualize, draft, edit, publish, and promote their writing on topics relating to trans identity and experience
+ Thoughtfully and intentionally helping to develop a working environment for trans and nonbinary writers at AS which allows for camaraderie, mutual support, long-term growth as writers and community members, and fosters a diversity of opinions and experiences, including contradicting ones
+ Soliciting and build relationships with trans writers outside AS’s current network, and curating work both for the mainsite and for special issues or special projects of your own design
+ Writing your own work for the website on a regular basis to be determined based on your availability and time, as well as participating in team writing projects such as roundtable posts and the A+ insider
+ Taking the lead in shaping the vision and intention behind the larger editorial strategy for trans-centered content at AS
+ Working closely alongside Autostraddle’s senior editors, design director and other subject editors, sharing updates, information and needs, soliciting ideas and feedback, and enlisting support and teamwork to make projects a success
+ Participate in staff culture initiatives, work on style guide, and/or otherwise support AS in terms of trans-inclusivity
+ Coordinate any larger editorial projects or initiatives centered around trans writers or identity, such as TDOR/TDOV coverage or any special issues or folios, with the support and assistance of other senior eds

The ideal candidate will have 1+ years experience writing and/or editing for a digital publication (besides Autostraddle) as well as experience in:

+ Managing people, ideally other writers
+ Project management
+ Online community culture and the specific nuances of politically progressive queer spaces
+ Social media

and will possess:

+ a strong sense of initiative and vision
+ passion for building, investing in and mentoring community, both in professional contexts and out
+ a discerning point of view as a writer and editor, with openness to others

Compensation:

You will be paid a base rate of $25/hr for up to 60 hours of work monthly ($1,200, untaxed, as an independent contractor; if the hired candidate needs to be paid taxed wages, we’ll need to adjust this rate to $20/hr) for the asterisked items above.

The following will be billed separately from the stipend, up to a cap of $2000/month:
+ Any additional articles you write yourself
+ Any community-centric roundtables/galleries that you come up with yourself involving staff and/or readers
+ Any stats bonuses acquired on the additional articles
