Value Judgments: on Trying to Develop a Different Relationship to Food by Roxane Gay for her newsletter, The Audacity (seriously, I’ve been thinking about this one for two days. It’s straight forward simplicity really masks how nuanced it is and how its gonna cut into the marrow of your bones)

Saw This, Thought of You

It’s a Dog’s Market. “Adopting used to be a good thing that good people could do. These days, you’re probably not good enough.” (OK I find “you’re probably not good enough” to be harsh, but this read fascinated me as an extreme allergy-haver who has recently been thinking about getting the shots to have a poodle. Finding an hypoallergenic dog who is also a rescue, because I do believe in the importance of rescuing — you would not believe how difficult it is!)

Republicans Hate Voting Rights Because They Threaten White Power. You know this and I know this, but I won’t stop including links about it until the Democrats stop fucking around like cowards and voting rights in this country get protected.

  1. Thank you for linking the NYT masking article. I’ve had such trouble finding non-alarmist, straightforward advice about masking after vaxxing. Thank you!

  2. The dog thing is so true. I had to euthanize my elderly dog in November, and it’s been impossible to find a new pet. All of the city shelters in the region have been basically empty (occasionally one will get a single dog/cat/rabbit or a litter, but they’re all adopted virtually the same day).

There are some private rescues here bringing dogs in from the US, Russia, Turkey and Greece, and all of them are wildly picky on who they’ll allow to adopt now. Which is great for the dogs in need for homes, of course! We’re still in partial lockdown where I am though, so I do wonder how many of those newly adopted (or bought) dogs are going to be given up once people are back at in-person work/school once we get back to that…

  3. Seeing that new Brandi Carlile video just this *second* reminded me that “Broken Horses” was on hold for me at library! Thx.
