Pop Culture Fix: Your Girl Diana Taurasi Is Now Officially The Greatest Women’s Basketball Player in History

I’m sorry I fixed your Pop Culture Fix a day late this week; I was traveling all day yesterday to our annual Autostraddle senior editors shakedown, but I’m here now and we’re all wearing Lavender Menace shirts and everything is going to be okay.

G.O.A.T.

+ Diana Taurasi broke the all-time WNBA scoring record this week. 13 seasons. 7,494 points. 19.9 points a game. It took Tina Thompson 17 seasons to get there and Taurasi is still going strong.

Also, I don’t think we talked about her wedding photo making it into People magazine. A big damn deal for very many reasons. Mechelle Voepel also wrote a really great profile of her for ESPN called You Don’t Know Diana Taurasi.

Kobe was there and King James is happy for her too!

Teevee

+ The new Game of Thrones trailer is suuuuper good. Best once since the Seven Devils one, in my misandrist opinion. There’s some Yara, some Daenerys. They’re not smooching, but they’re both there, so I’m not giving up hope.

+ Danielle Brooks, the heart and soul of Orange Is the New Black‘s fifth season, has done some really good interviews lately. This one with Variety is particularly great.

What I think Taystee has learned from Poussey, and why it’s such a heartbreak for her, is because with Taystee, she’s always been abandoned by love, manipulated by love, doubted. But with Poussey, she’s the only one who showed her what genuine, pure love looks like. I think there’s a moment in there that she realizes that’s not the way to go. I think she will come out on top, and I think she also came out on top having such support.

+ Also, New York Magazine agrees with you that Danielle Brooks’ work on season five demands an Emmy.

+ Samantha Bee: Fantastic Words and Where Not To Find Them

+ Bitch thinks Titus Andromedan should break up with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

+ Funny or Die made an MRA parody of The Handmaid’s Tale and it made me laugh out loud like six times.

Movies

+ I don’t really know if this is true, but I like the headline: As Wonder Woman Soars, Movies Starring Men Fail to Connect at Box Office

+ On the heels of Matt Bomer’s Anything premiering at the Los Angeles Film Festival, Jen Richards, Alexandra Billings, Trace Lysette, Jamie Clayton and more trans actors have made a PSA for ScreenCrush about why it’s important to hire trans people for trans roles.

Queer Humans, Out and About

If you’ve been in line at a grocery store at any time in the last two years or are a frequenter of celebrity gossip website pages, you’ve seen speculation that Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are on the brink of marital disaster — but the paps have now decided the world’s most famous lesbian couple are in love again and everything’s all right because they smooched on the street in WeHo this week. “SERIOUS PDA,” says OK. “So in love!” says the Daily Mail. They “shut down divorce reports” with a “PDA-fest” says The Inquisitir.

I SAY ENOUGH! Enough speculation about Ellen and Portia! They’re FINE! They’re about to celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary! They love cats and dogs and dancing and they’re deeply in love and my heart honestly cannot handle anymore horror this year so leave them alone! Here is Ellen with a puppy using products from her new PetSmart line. GOOD DAY.

  1. I agree about Ellen and Portia, can’t we just have one nice thing that nobody tries to rip to shreds right now

  2. Heather, I am dying at “but the paps have now decided the world’s most famous lesbian couple are in love again” because I am just imagining pap smears decided this

  3. Congrats to Diana Taurasi that is a pretty amazing accomplishment. It is even more amazing she was able to do it in her home town(google says she’s from LA suburb of Glendale, California). Though a part of as an LA fan me wishes she played for the Sparks instead.
