Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months ago dude, this is perfect! i’ve got a long commute and i have been rea-ding.
i just finished reading “still life: adventures in taxidermy” by melissa milgrom, 262 pgs. (@internrachel, @julia1). oh man, oh man, i really liked this book. i’ll preface by saying i really like taxidermy, i have a puffin head name beau and he’s the greatest, the north american animal wing at the american museum of natural history (AMNH) is the only place i go every time a visit (which is pretty frequently). so yeah this book was right up my alley but i generally liked milgrom’s style of writing and her interviews are fascinating! she taxidermies a squirrel with a man who was in charge of taxidermy at AMNH for 28 years and the taxidermist that works with damien hirst (who is a ridiculously awesome lady). the author definitely tries to disprove stereotypes about taxidermists (they’re all hunters, they hate animals) and shows them as artists with a very demanding craft. i’d definitely recommend it!
This sounds really interesting. I’ve always been fascinated by taxidermy, which may be odd for a vegetarian, but still. I definitely want to check out the book.
not strange at all! all the taxidermists in the book are major animal lovers and, though i eat meat, i really like animals too. i think there’s a lot of respect towards animals in taxidermy, read it read it!
