Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months ago I just finished Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” (588 pages)- it was bombin’! I love basically every single thing this man writes, but I was really hesitant to start this book, cause the basic plot line of old gods of America battling new gods didn’t appeal to me at all. I really should have known better, the book was fantastically well-written and the plot evolved really nicely, if at a fairly slow pace. I have really mixed feelings about the “new gods” of Internet, drugs, cars, and even a railroad baron because I feel like they don’t contrast the traditional old gods very well. The old gods, though, were fantastic! The main mythology he pulled from was Norse, which is my favorite, but I think it might be a bit less fun to read for someone who isn’t familiar with it; I know that I really want to brush up on my Asian mythologies after reading it. He had Japanese, Voodoo, West African, Egyptian, Slavic, Native American, Hindu, Arabic, German, Chinese, Irish, and even Aztec folklore folded in. Also, the epilogue echoes his poem Instructions (http://www.endicott-studio.com/cofhs/cofinstr.html), which is possibly my very favorite combination of words ever. So yeah. I’m gonna go read Anansi Boys now. :)
@internrachel @julia1 Oops, forgot that bit!
I have been wanting to read this book forever! I may push it further up the list now. :D
Ooh, I prefered Anansi Boys to American Gods. I just felt AG lost its way somewhere in the middle and though it came back again I was disappointed. In contrast to you I loved the premise and, like you, I loved how he pulled in lots of different mythologies. I’m interested to see what they do with the HBO series though (and I hear Gaiman’s going to write a 2nd AG book?) as I imagine it will be visually stunning.
When I heard there was going to be an HBO series, I started flailing with joy so hard I thought I would take flight.
Now you say there’s supposed to be a 2nd AG book?!? It’s like all my birthdays have come at once!
Yep, he said it on Twitter, I believe, so it may be one of those take it with a pinch of salt things.
In this MTV interview (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1666281/neil-gaiman-american-gods.jhtml) it seems a bit more speculative but he does talk about a “10th-anniversary edition of “American Gods” will also feature more than 10,000 words omitted from his initial draft of the novel” – which’ll bring it up to around 650 pages ;)
I freaking adore this book! It’s one of my all time favorites. Sometimes, I’ll get to the end and just flip right back to the beginning again because I’m not ready for it to be over.
