Quiz: Which Queer Tarot Deck Should You Try?

Pulling tarot cards for yourself or for friends can be fun, magical, empowering, intuitive, sexy, inspiring, calming, grounding, joyful, exciting, stimulating, relaxing, or anything else that you want it to be. And while buying hundreds of decks isn’t the way for most non-professionals, it can be really powerful to get your hands on a new set of cards and see how they can challenge your assumptions and expand your interpretations of these larger-than-life archetypes and everyday figures.

But with hundreds of decks in the world, it can be hard to know where to start, especially if you’re new to tarot. And while more and more creators are working to be inclusive, there’s nothing quite like working with a set of cards that was designed by someone within our community, someone who openly identifies as queer.

Ready to experience some deck lust? Every one of these decks is queer-created, gorgeous, beginner-friendly, and available for purchase right now. (Please note that while there are some truly incredible queer decks that have been created with limited print runs throughout the last hundred years, I wanted to focus here on card sets that were made by queer creators, that are also currently available for purchase and not so advanced as to alienate beginners. Please feel free to drop your favorite queer decks in the comments!)

I make no apologies for bringing these incredible decks to your attention — what you do with this information is entirely up to you. (But supporting queer creators is its own kind of magic!)

  1. Just throwing out 2 decks that I LOVE:

The Neo Tarot: queer illustrations and gender-neutral terms
The Collective Tarot: Not in print anymore, but it’s my favorite ever book because the cards are illustrated by different queer and queer-minded anti-racist artists. The book with the cards is the most deep and intuitive book I’ve ever encountered.

  2. I too got Fifth Spirit Tarot! I loved all of the questions in this quiz, and made my wife help me pick some answers 😊
“Expressive, welcoming, dramatic” is one of the best descriptions of myself I have ever read.

    • The Black Queer Tarot

While I’m deeply honored and it’s gorgeous, as a white person I have definitely not earned that. My skin color has literally saved my life on at least two occasions. I could definitely buy one to support the artist but it would not be appropriate for me to use it with others. But thank you!

  3. I’m not spiritual but I recently tried tarot and love how it helps me know my own mind or get meditative. I refuse to buy decks that aren’t queer art so thank you very much for this list!

  4. my wish for autostraddle quizzes where the answers lead to decks or books or other purchasable items: an accompanying listicle with the full array of options, and maybe also the little description from the quiz answer.

(I got the Outsider tarot, which seems pretty cool!)

  5. i feel like this quiz actually taught me something about myself. i don’t need another tarot deck at all, but i loved this quiz. i am gonna borrow some of these answers as affirmation. “magic lives in everything and i believe in magic” is probably the best summation of my spirituality I’ve ever read. wow. thank you.

  6. Thanks. You know In terms of Tarot, the Athens Casino can be seen as a representation of the Wheel of Fortune card. The Wheel of Fortune is a card of change, luck, and fortune. It is a reminder that life is full of ups and downs, and that fortune can change at any moment.
