Pop Culture Fix: “Batwoman” and “Queen Sugar” Preview Their #BlackLivesMatter Storylines

I have done the unthinkable this winter: I have gone through two entire tubes of Burt’s Bees chapstick without losing them! I would like to think that shows some real maturity on part, but I think it’s just further proof I only leave my house like once a month to go to the doctor. But! Inside there’s TV, at least! Batwoman especially! And here is this week’s Pop Culture Fix.

+ Regina King is making her SNL hosting debut finally!

+ Lily Singh explores her impact on the internet.

+ And speaking of: Here’s Lily Singh and Javicia Leslie, just a couple of bisexual women of color taking over the world!

+ Javicia Leslie previews Batwoman‘s upcoming Black Lives Matter storyline.

“I think at the end of the day, if you’re part of an institution that you know is not being held accountable for what’s wrong, are you a part of the problem? And that’s something that Ryan forces Sophie to really look at,” star Javicia Leslie tells TVLine. “Yeah, you say that you’re different, but are you really different when you know that there are people that you work with killing people and not being held accountable for those acts just because they’re considered police?”

+ Queen Sugar will also be grappling with the COVID pandemic amid the George Floyd BLM protests in season five.

During the pandemic-related production shutdown, series creator Ava DuVernay decided to “completely revamp the Season 5 storyline to address the very real issues our country was facing through the lens of the beloved Bordelon family and the fictional community of St. Josephine,” OWN explains. Writing alongside returning showrunner Anthony Sparks and supervising producer Norman Vance, DuVernay reconceived the character arcs and storylines to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter protest movement, and corruption in politics, showcasing the specific impact and ramifications these issues have on communities and people of color.
