Get to know the Lowcountry!

Lately, I’ve been obsessing over the concept of queer generational trauma: the pain passed down to us from our ancestors, which we bequeath in turn to those who come after us.

I thought it would be fun to do a ranked list of the 12 queer novels that stood out to me this year. And by “fun,” I mean pleasurably agonizing.

“It’s a sweaty, sweaty horror show.”

What exactly do I mean by database? Well, I want it to be something that can be queried or filtered; it’s not just a long book list, and searching isn’t limited merely to title or author but allows you to interrogate every intersection of queer interest.

“Stories about huge families full of love, whether nuclear or chosen or just-for-school, were the comfort food of my childhood, and I’m trying to find something similar for my queer adulthood. Is there such a thing?”

From gorgeous graphic memoirs to epic fantasy tales, twisty thrillers, swoony romances, exceptional essay collections, and more, there’s an amazing queer book from 2019 on this list for everyone!

“The way you can bring together Jews from all walks of life to share a holiday together over a meal made with love and a table filled with candles, wine and challah, and we can join together in song and laughter and interruption and feel quickly like family because, well, we are.”

Most queer books focus on romantic relationships. These ones are centered on queer friendship.

“Let’s take a moment of silence for all of us women in the U.S. who did not know until this season that in Canada y’all throw axes for fun, and who are now contemplating crossing the border. I can’t be the only one whose world was rocked this hard by axe throwing.”

“Basketball is extremely hot, and I wanted that to come through in the book.”

My relationship with my nibling made me understand how important it is to continue living my queer life out loud.

This list of queer and/or trans focused books about autism are mostly nonfiction, but I’ve also included a few novels by queer autistic authors featuring queer autistic characters, including science fiction, fantasy, and romance.

How do I get my parents to see that neutrality in this situation feels like they’re rejecting me too?
