The time to watch Disobedience, Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams’ new lesbian film, is upon us! If you’re unaware that such a film exists, well allow me to introduce you! Disobedience is an adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s book of the same name, and it tells the story of Ronit, a 32-year-old woman whose father’s death forces her to return to the Orthodox Jewish community she grew up in, and also to Esti, her first love, who still lives there and practices the faith of their youth.
Reviews out of the Toronto International Film Festival in February were very good, securing a solid 93% Rotten Tomatoes rating, in fact. Most of those early reviews focused on the sex scene, which I can confirm is six minutes long and absolutely nothing like Blue Is the Warmest Color, which it keeps getting compared to. I had the good fortune to watch the movie last week and I absolutely loved it and will be writing about that more in the near future. (I also had the good fortune to chat with Rachel Wesiz this morning, and you’ll be reading that interview very soon on this website.)

I really, really, really, really hope I can see Disobedience in the theater. Their website says it opens in Sacramento May 11 and nationwide May 18. I’m crossing everything that “nationwide” includes a theater slightly closer to home than Sacramento. I got lucky with Professor Marston playing locally and am hoping this happens again with Disobedience.

Another feeling I have is rage that despite this film being set and filmed in London, it’s about to screen in the US but we in the UK still don’t have a release date!!!

I saw a preview screening on Melbourne and loved it. Both Rachels are so good.
I don’t think she’s necessarily 32 in the movie, everyone has been aged up and ages/ years are discussed really vaguely.
At MQFF? I was so excited they got to premier it! Did find the saliva bit a little weird though

I had the opportunity to see this movie a couple weeks ago! It’s absolutely incredible, so well acted and shot, and so sad and sexy at the same time. I totally recommend it.
I am so stoked about this movie that I can’t even begin to talk about it! I just hope that it’ll be released in Brazil (if we’re lucky enough) sometime this year and in the meantime I’ll read the book.

I’ve been looking forward to this movie all month (all year, really) and I’ve just looked it up and it doesn’t open in the UK until AUGUST. AUGUST.
Like, I’m used to waiting for movies because I’m from New Zealand but there are so few queer movies (especially about queer women and especially with big Hollywood names like Rachel and Rachel) that I could feel the anticipation for this one in my soul.
