WATCH: Fallon Fox, Kye Allums & More Discuss Trans Equality In Sports, Media and Eduction

Uprising of Love and It Gets Better just held a live Google hangout on transgender equality in sports, the media and schools. The chat included transgender advocates including Kye Allums, the first openly transgender athlete in NCAA division 1 sports, trans woman MMA fighter Fallon Fox, and Kylar Broadus, founder of the Trans People of Color Coalition.

All these smart people took questions from the public about trans activism, transmisogyny, racism against trans people of color, and more.

Uprising of Love is an organization designed to strengthen ties between LGBTI people in Russia and LGBTI people and allies around the world. This video is part of the Uprising of Love Hangout Series, which leads up to the Winter Olympics in February.

  1. This was such a great google hangout! Thanks for sharing. Loved the conversation, the questions, and the participants. Loved what Kye had to say about self love. I have so much love for Kylar Broadus, but I did feel like there was some discomfort with acknowledging transmasculine privilege in some of his statements. I agree that it’s really important that there are these internal conversations and to not end up in an oppression olympics-style conversation. However, I really felt like that one segment got derailed by trying to downplay that transmasculine people for the most part can have privilege accrued from living in a sexist, misogynistic and transmisogynistic society. So yeah, while it’s important to acknowledge that trans men aren’t this monolith and that POC trans men may not experience the same benefits of male privilege as their white trans men counterparts, and that trans men can be and are also forced into sex work, I just felt that one segment got kind of derailed. Also I had no idea Eli went to Pitzer, so I felt a lot of 5C pride about all this. Thanks for sharing.

    • Acccctualllyyy, Broadus came to my (very small) college class once, and straight up said he doesn’t believe he has privilege. Male, passing, whatever. I just sort of smiled and nodded, but um…yeah, that’s just inaccurate. It kind of made me lose lots of respect for him.

  2. This was super duper amazing and excellent, I’m so glad I got to watch this. My fist was pumping with each of Eli’s points, especially towards the end re: trans women and on helping the Russian LGBTQ+ community.
