The Comment Awards Prefer the Rainbow to the Pot of Gold

Good day travelers! Happy day after Pi Day and day before St. Patrick’s Day eve day!

This week we bid adieu to underwear love with posts on tech savvy panties, the dapperQ underwear survey and plus size underwear. Recaps for love-to-hate shows Glee and Pretty Little Liars went up and Vanessa, meanwhile, went down to the RodeoH with the harness’s creator, Jennifer.

Also this week, the Queen kinda sorta showed support for gay rights, Cara gave nuanced look Christine Quinn’s NYC mayoral bid and Laura thinks there might yet be hope for the new Pope.

Speaking of world affairs, did you see that we got our hands on a queer girl guide to St. Petersburg, Russia? Brilliant trans*scribe posts continued with Robyn addressing sports and transitioning, Nika discovering beauty in baldness and Sarah’s trans* coming out letter to name a few.

Now put on your fancy new Keds because we have awards to give out!

  1. But giving bigoted people space on AS would make me cry :(

They don’t deserve giant threads and they feel entitled to the whole iternet/world anyways, so it won’t stop them from spilling their hate everywhere. Even in safe(ish) spaces that bisexuals and trans* people create for themselves. Even within the context of articles that were not written by, about and for them. Even when the actual content says to NOT do X,Y and Z they will go on and do exactly X, Y and Z. They just like to violate, I guess.

So, even if it’s tiresome to read it over and over and over again (welcome to our daily experience), just keep calling the bigots out. That is what makes AS feel like a safe(ish) space and that is what make us feel welcome. That and the inclusion of awesome bi and trans* related content, of cause.

    • No, I agree. Giving them space feels icky.
And you’re right- as a bisexual individual, I certainly feel happier and safer when the community calls people out saying unpleasant things about me.

My suggestion was mostly tongue-in-cheek, but it’s definitely a dream to have one place where free expression is respected yet I don’t have to weed through a sea of hateful ignorance (that clearly didn’t read the article, nor the preceding comments) every time an article is posted about one of those topics.

On a related note, did I read riese right in saying (somewhere in that morass of a thread) that collapsible comment threads were coming soon? Because that would accomplish almost exactly what I jokingly suggested, without having to actually designate a space for ignorant hate. Super cool, if so.

And thanks for my first comment award! :D
