Teddy Geiger is Trans and I’ve Never Loved a Pop Singer More

Acclaimed pop singer and songwriter Teddy Geiger has mustered every ounce of confidence she has and cannonballed into the water, and come out as trans on her Instagram and Twitter.

In the mid 2000’s, Geiger became famous for her uplifting and heart-growing pop, with songs like “For You I Will (Confidence)” and “These Walls.” Since then, she’s continued her career to be a successful songwriter writing songs for artists like One Direction, Maroon 5 and writing several hits like “Stitches,” “Treat You Better” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” for Shawn Mendes. Yeah, one of the most popular songwriters on the radio is trans. Think about how cool that is.

She initially came out in an Instagram post after fans had been asking about her appearance and she said that she was transitioning, then a few days later posted that she had started Hormone Replacement Therapy.

More recently, Geiger took to Twitter to answer some more questions fans have been asking. In one tweet she says “Heyaaaa! A lot of u guys are asking. She/her pronouns are perfect ☺️?” and in another she says “And… yes I am still Teddy??.”

How freaking cute is the name Teddy? I immediately thought of the heart surgeon Dr. Teddy Altman from Grey’s Anatomy. She’s also posted a bunch of super cute pictures to her Instagram and on her insta stories. If you’re not following Teddy Geiger on Twitter and Instagram, I’d suggest you go follow her right now.

Personally, this means a lot, a lot to me. I loved Geiger’s music as a teen. “For You I Will” was a huge song in my friend group, we loved it and sang it all the time. And I remember watching and loving her in the movie The Rocker. I still listen to “For You I Will” all the time and have had it on my iPhone for years. I became a fan of Laura Jane Grace and Against Me! after she came out, but this time, an artist who I’ve been a fan of for a decade has come out as one of my sisters.

Thank you for your great music, Teddy, thank you for your songwriting, thank you for your online presence. Thank you for being public about this journey and your identity. You’re going to inspire so many trans people to love themselves and be proud of who they are. Teddy Geiger, you are beautiful, wonderful, talented and I’m so incredibly happy that you’re able to be yourself and transition and live your life the way you want to and deserve to.

  1. Ahhhh I am so happy for her!!!!!!

I’m also p happy because like of the only two at least somewhat famous living people from the Rochester area I can name, both are queer? That’s pretty cool and I think that means there’s something in the water here that makes cool queer humans (I mean also as an anecdote to this extent, look at the main core of the kids I was in daycare with: 3 queer humans, 2 straight humans, like this isn’t even “kids who were friends and then all realized they were queer later” like this is entirely due to parental decisions on finding a local daycare when we were tiny humans were fetal to age three that I know these very awesome people who are queer, and while we’re pretty cool I think both Teddy Geiger and Abby Wambach eclipse us in the coolness factor).

  2. This is great news! I hope the more celebs and people in more known positions come out the better it will get for all of us.
