Taking a Look At the Eisner Winners and Wonder Woman’s New Movie Costume!

Back in April I highlighted the women (and one non-binary person) who were nominated for Eisner Awards, which many see as the premiere American comic book awards. Well, the winners of those awards were announced at San Diego Comic-Con recently and so I thought I’d go over them and point out some of my favorites. But wait! That’s not all that was announced at Comic-Con! We also got our first look at Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman movie.

A few of the women I mentioned in that last article were awarded Eisners, so that’s pretty awesome (although it would have been even more awesome to see more women on the winner’s list). The award for Best Publication for Kids went to Faith Erin Hicks for her fantastic book The Adventures of Superhero Girl. Israeli comic book artist Rutu Modan won Best Graphic Album-New for her book The PropertyJordie Bellaire won Best Coloring for her work on a variety of projects. Best Scholarly/Academic Work went to Sheena C. Howard and Ronald L. Jackson II for “Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation.” Finally, Fiona Staples very deservedly won Best Painter/Multimedia Artist for her work on, I’ll say it again, “current best comic in the world” Saga, which also won for Best Continuing Series and Best Writer for Brian K. Vaughan.

Some of my other favorite comics won some of the biggest awards. In fact, a few of the comics I mentioned in my Pull List column a few weeks back were big winners. Best Single Issue went to Matt Fraction and David Aja for the head-over-heels brilliant Hawkeye #11 “Pizza Is My Business.” Aja also took home the Best Cover Artist award for his work on the book. Best New Series went to Sex Criminals by Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, another awesome book that I love.

Other big awards went to Sean Murphy for Best Penciler/Inker on The Wake, The Wake for Best Limited Series, Jeffrey Brown for Best Humor Publication for his book Vader’s Little Princess, Best Writer/Artist to Jaime Hernandez for Love and Rockets New Stories, vol. 6 and Best Short Story to Gilbert Hernandez for “Untitled” in that same book. For a complete look at the winners in each category, you can check out the Eisner Awards website.

Now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for for what seems like forever: the first look at Wonder Woman’s costume in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice!

To be honest, at first I wasn’t really feeling it, and there are still some aspects of it that I just simply don’t like. I mean, I really do love the Classical Greek Warrior look it has, and she definitely looks like she’s ready to kick some serious butt. I’m really digging both the shinguards and the bracelets. There are a lot of things that harken back to some classic Wonder Woman motifs, but it doesn’t look too much like a “superhero costume.” Except for one major thing. Those platform heels. Really?!? (with Seth and Amy) Everything else about her screams super-powered warrior princess, so I have no idea why she would be wearing those shoes (and this is coming from a femme who is 100% in favor of people wearing heels 24/7). I’m also feeling a little weird about the monotone color palette, but I do think it looks pretty good over all.

In a Comic-Con where Marvel once again failed to announce any female-led superhero movies, or even any substantial news about women superheroes’ roles in their movies (although Marvel did announce that Evangeline Lily will be playing Hope Van Dyne, Janet Van Dyne’s adult daughter in the Ant-Man film, so what does that mean for the future of the Wasp in the MCU???) it was good to see at least some news about a female superhero in the movies. All I really want out of the movie industry is more movies about awesome ladies. Is it really too much to ask?

On August 1, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy comes out in theaters, starring Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close and Vin Diesel. You guys, you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this to be coming out just so I have an excuse to post one of my top three all-time favorite Youtube videos: Vin Diesel singing Rihanna’s “Stay.”

  1. Look! Someone on Tumblr fixed the new Wonder Woman costume! Now there are colors, flat boots, and a skirt that covers her crotch better!

    • Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!!! I’d go to see that movie. that’s my biggest pet peeve, women in action movies fighting in heels and dressing in clothes i wouldn’t go to a nightclub in. I’m a femme and love heels heaps. they’re sexy. But who wears heels into battle?!!! No one. It doesn’t ramp up sex appeal, it makes the character look ridiculous.

  2. Knowing what the Batman and Superman costumes are going to look like, I’m actually digging the Wonder Woman costume a whole hell of a lot more than I thought I was going to. The heels are a little eye-rolly, but they put Black Widow in heels, too. It’s a thing that is in comics movies.

  3. I wouldn’t consider DC any more progressive for putting Wonder Woman in a movie at this point. DC has the advantage of having the most popular female superhero of all time. Also, knowing Zack Snyder, there’s a slim chance this is going to be a Wonder Woman we can all be super happy about. Marvel has already had Black Widow in three movies at this point (and she wasn’t anywhere close to a household name when she first showed up in Iron Man 2). And yes, she deserves a solo movie, but Joss Whedon has said that there are four prominent female roles in the new Avengers movie. So, that’s Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Maria Hill, and many people are guessing that the fourth could be Carol Danvers, which would be amazing. Although, it could end up being Sharon Carter as well. Add in Gamora and Nebula from Guardians and I’d say Marvel is still beating DC as far as female representation goes. But I’ll admit they both still need to step it up in terms of female representation and definitely POC representation. But I have more faith that Marvel will be the studio that finally makes a really good female superhero movie than I do that DC will. I just wish they’d hurry up and do it.

  4. Commenting for the ‘Really?!? (with Seth and Amy)’ reference because I love that and am always sad that no-one ever gets me when I make a reference to it!

  5. Megan Rose Gedris (of Meaty Yogurt/Lesbian Pirates from Outer Space/Yume/burlesque fame) pointed out on tumblr that the costume feels very Xena, and I agree. I’m hoping that’s a blatant homage, because Xena is really awesome!

  6. I’m still holding out for Laverne Cox to be cast as Wonder Woman, make my super hero dreams come true.
I mean, look at her in this costume!

    • After seeing this, I would like to move my comment from the top down here: “Sooo much better. Sigh.”

  7. I’m happy about the Eisner wins. So much good stuff getting recognition! Good work, people!

Also, I don’t hate that Wonder Woman costume. I do like that Tumblr fixed version better, but it’s nowhere near as bad as it could have been, considering Zack “Sucker Punch” Snyder is at the helm. I mean, even the platform boots aren’t bad. I was expecting stilettos!
