Sunday Funday’s Suffragist Cats Are Going Down Under

Hello, cheesecake brownies! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas where I am, meaning I am losing every last shred of my shit and surviving on peppermint-flavored cheer. Which really makes it perfect time for Sunday to be rolling around once again so I can bask in the glow of my people. I’M FEELIN’ JOLLY, Y’ALL.

LGBT in the D

KICK, a local center for African-American queers, has launched a campaign called “LGBT in the D” to foster queer community in Detroit. From a press release:

“As we walk into 2014, we want to reveal to the world how ‘Happy Together’ we are in Detroit,” says Curtis Lipscomb, executive director of KICK. “Today, we start the campaign on an incredible billboard located in Palmer Park, our culturally identified neighborhood on W McNichols (Six Mile) Rd at Woodward Ave.”“LGBT in the ‘D'” represents KICK’s vision of our city’s progressive movement,” says KICK’s project coordinator Alvina M. H. Bursey. “We are a diversified mixture of individuals from various walks of life and the billboard campaign participants are residents of southeast Michigan, program attendees,The LEAD Academy graduates, friends and KICK board members.”

“During current critical times in Detroit, we identify as a “Renaissance City” and will continue to move forward and show our togetherness as a community of people,” says executive assistant David A. Nelson, Jr. LGBT in the ‘D'” is a loving visual that portrays how dynamic and together we are through our endless battle for equality.”

Elton Lays the Smackdown

I think it’s gonna be a long, long time ’til Elton John is invited back to Russia.

Elton John’s scheduled concert at Crocus City Hall in Moscow went on as planned Friday night, though Russian officials are unlikely to approve of the out musician’s comments in support of the nation’s embattled LGBT community.

“You took me to your hearts all these years ago and you’ve always welcomed me with warmth and open arms any time I’ve visited,” said John from the stage, according to a transcript posted by gay blogger Joe Jervis. “You have always embraced me and you have never judged me. So I am deeply saddened and shocked over the current legislation that is now in place against the LGBT community here in Russia. In my opinion, it is inhumane and it is isolating. People have demanded that because of this legislation, I must not come here to Russia. But many, many more people asked me to come and I listened to them. I love coming here.”

  1. My favourite suffrage cat is the furious black and white kitten who wants to vote. I think more political campaigns should feature cats.

  2. Those Suffragette cats are the best thing I’ve seen in ages! I love the one in the hat the best although the angry black and white one is amazing too.

  3. I’ve been listening to that song from Frozen nonstop for the last week. So fantastic.

Also that was the best explanation of sex I have ever seen.

  4. “Don’t let them in, don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know
    Well now they know”

Can we all indulge me and pretend “Let It Go” is Elsa’s coming out song?

    • No joke, I really thought that Elsa’s magical winter powers were a metaphor for queer sexuality. Maybe I was hella projecting, but I really felt that. Loved the movie so much.

      • Haha, “hella projecting” describes my faulty gaydar perfectly. Still, we might be onto something. I couldn’t help but notice that Elsa is the only disney princess not to get a guy at the end of the movie…

        • Elsa’s no Disney princess, she’s a Queen! Haha. But yeah, she’s definitely queer. I mean the whole movie could be about her coming out; other peoples’ ostracizing fear of something out of their control and different from the norm, towards finding her place and realizing she’s special, etc. I don’t think that’s even my favorite part of it all though. I also loved the strong message of “girls are powerful and can do anything” that was so present in the movie. Lol I feel like I cried through most of it. So many feelings!

    • Oh yes. Ohhhh yes. Now that i listened to the song – it is about queer sexuality and no one ever could tell me otherwise. :)

it’s strange how all things converge in the end.

I have always identified with the story Elsa’s is taken from – first with the little mirrorshard finding its way into my eye, allowing me to see things others are first unaware of and then like to pretend are not there. And then growing up to rule in solitude, majesty and right of the strongest – with the only warmth directed towards the successor of the line, the next little girl i have gifted with a shard like mine, to stand a chance. Frozen of course is that story brutally baselinified – and has turned out as a metaphor of sexuality rather than complete lack of consideration for those ‘loving’ you, cold disconnect and evil. But well queer sexuality is all good too, and complements those other things well. This game can be played on many beautiful layers and i like it more and more.

    • I can attest to how wonderful the movie is. I just saw it this afternoon. See it as soon as you can!

  5. Idina Menzel is a goddess. And that video was possibly the best explanation of lesbian sex. The sound effects…good grief, too real.

  6. I haven’t been interested in a Disney cartoon in, like, 20 years, but I think I’ll probably end up Netflixing ‘Frozen’ because of the SPOILER I’d heard about the nature of the “true love” in this particular movie.

  7. Frozen sounds awesome. I loved Rise of the Guardians, and this looks like it’ll have the same sort of feel. (Yes, I’m in my twenties. Yes, I go see these in cinemas. Yes, I am glad that I have young cousins as an excuse.)

    • I don’t have anyone young to go with. My friend and I saw it last night and laughed so hard that children were turning around in their seats to look at us. True story. You’re not alone.

  8. Also love to learn something new – what i’m taking home now is the happy knowledge there were lolcats even before the internets
