Sunday Funday Loves Rock Star Quinceañeras

Hey pals! For many of us, it’s the beginning of another full work week after a luscious week of slowing down. Hopefully you were filled with all the inspiration you need to power through this next week. I know you can do it! The year is only about 35 days away from ending, and you can make it! We all can! If you need some more fuel, check out what I got for you this week.

Adorable Living

+ Ikea did a home makeover video with Krysta and Cristina, a couple who bought a house primarily because they got an adorable new puppy named Whiskey. The gay feel good story you need this morning.

You’re Not Hardcore Unless You Live Hardcore

+ Laura Jane Grace taught little kids about gender using rock and roll at an event called Genderful at the Brooklyn Library! (If you check it out on Facebook, beware of the comment section)

Our Queer TV Ourselves

+ On a new HBO documentary series,15: A Quinceañera Story, one character, Zoey is a trans girl. She will dedicate her quinceañera to her two trans godmothers who never got to have a quinceañera of their own. Get ready to cry!!!!!!!

+ The new trailer for NBC’s Rise just came out! It seems like a mashup of our favorite show to love to hate, Glee and like…Remember the Titans? I don’t know, but it seems like it’s gonna be gay culture. Rosie Perez and Auli’i Cravalho are in it!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whvPjWm7ZE0

+ She’s Gotta Have It, a remake of the Spike Lee movie of the same name just dropped on Netflix and I hear it’s good and gay.

https://www.hulu.com/watch/1153391

+ The first three episodes of  Marvel’s The Runaways is on Hulu now, and while it doesn’t seem gay yet, there’s a lot of teenage nascent feminism and someone’s got purple hair, and there are a lot of powerful older women with tight ponytails and well manicured nails, so I think you’ll like it.

Slow news week equals a good news week to me. Hope you enjoyed it, hope you’re fired up for the week to come. Here’s some love (and a picture of my cat being perfect) to hold you over until next Sunday.

  1. @alarae an additional bit of Sunday fun:

Last Sunday I went to a queer church service and they read a poem you wrote! It was so beautiful and I was so tickled that I knew who the author was!

And it was amazing I heard it in the first place because it was in a city I don’t live in, in a church I don’t go to, in a religion I don’t practice, at an event I hadn’t even planned to be at!

Thanks for doing you and sharing :-)

  2. I just got my undercut back after a year of growing it out (classic bisexual can’t make up her gotdang mind) so seeing the same undercut and little bun combo in the IKEA video made my whole day!

  3. I love the Genderful library event! I don’t think my smallish midwestern town is quite ready for such a thing, but it makes me happy to know that such a thing exists!

It is amazing all of the gendered expectations that are placed on kids from the moment someone pronounces them a boy or a girl. I was handing out toothbrushes to kids for Halloween and the kids got to pick the color. Parents strongly encouraged the girls to pick the pinks and purples but the boys were strong discouraged from doing so and steered towards the blues and greens.

  4. Laura Jane Grace gives me hope and life! Also, can’t wait to watch A Quinceañera Story, which looks amazing!

  5. That Ikea video was cute but there wasn’t enough Whiskey in it.

I know, I know, if I had a dollar for every time I’ve said that… but WHAT A CUTE PUPPY!
