You’re amazingly brave.
As a Chinese adoptee with white parents, I really felt this struggle. Also, my first Mandarin tutor taught in traditional, and then my second tutor taught in simplified, so that was fun as a kid.
Can someone please briefly explain the difference between simplified and traditional ( is that the right word)? I’ve googled and i still don’t get it and I don’t know any Chinese speakers to ask
The Chinese writing system has thousands of characters, some of which are very complicated. In the 50’s, the Chinese government changed many characters to supposedly be easier to learn. These are what make up simplified Chinese, and are used by most Mandarin speakers in China. Taiwanese people, Cantonese speakers, and a few other groups mostly use the original, or traditional characters.
Thank you Kate
Thank you so much for this Cameron! As a native Mandarin speaker who learned Traditional Chinese, I appreciate this conversation between you and your mum a lot.
So relatable, Cameron!
Cameron I love this so much.
