Sara Quin Is in a Rap Song, and the Remix is Free Free Free

Intern Grace’s Team Pick:

Brooklyn-based rapper Theophilus London is a friend of the queer ladies. He’s collaborated with Autostraddle-favorite Holly Miranda and wore a hat from all-women Smith College on the cover of his This Charming Mixtape.

More recently, London collaborated with Sara Quin (of “Tegan &” fame) on his cynical song “Why Even Try.” This is a pretty good endorsement for London, considering Quin has been vocal about her distaste for homophobia in the hip-hop community.

This is Sara Quin with London performing on the Late Show with David Letterman. She’s very cute. You’ll like it.

The song was released on London’s EP Lovers Holiday in February, but listen: The killer RAC remix is available for free from Mashable! It’s a little more ethereal than the original, has a lot more Sara and is very danceable. It’s a great summer song, and it’s kind of a departure from the typical Tegan & Sara affair.

London’s full album Timez Are Weird These Days, which includes the original version of “Why Even Try,” drops July 19.

Grace Ellis has been writing and making hack-job graphics for Autostraddle since 2011 and is a co-creator and co-writer of the comic book series Lumberjanes. She is mostly an intern in name only. (Mostly.) She lives in Columbus, Ohio because why anything. Also, she wants to write the Black Widow movie and feels like if she just keeps telling people, eventually she will be allowed to do it. She has a Twitter and a Tumblr, both of which are pretty above average.

  1. Ha ha Sara is adorbs, but I have to say, this is what happens when you take the guitar/keyboard away from T&S: awkward bouncing.

    • yes! lol except I feel that if someone forced me to dance on national television, I would probably look even more awkward! scary thought!

  2. this has been out for the longest time ever. im kind of surprised it wasn’t on earlier. good song though

  3. Sara’s dancing is super adorbs.
Also, liking the look of the keyboardist… Just sayin’.

  4. some mere observations:

    1. that woman on the keyboards is one sexy fox
    2. theophyllus (what kind of a name is THAT) has a cute dancing style
    3. sara’s trenchoat is hideous
    4. the verse is kinda catchy, but the intro was WAY awkward

  5. That’s such a cute video, though I like the remix much more than the original. It’s probably just because of the extra Sara Quin

  6. In addition to this piece, I’m pretty sure Sara Quin is featured in a song with the Seattle (to Minnesota) transplant Astronautalis as well.

But, then, I could be wrong about that.

  7. I’ve been a pretty big fan of theophilus london for a while now so it’s nice to see him on autostraddle :D sara singing with him is a great bonus

  8. Actually “trout fishing in America” Was the one who paired up
With astronatilus (however you spell it) for the song , and the music video Contrails.
Also I love Sara in this. She looks fucking adorable in a rain jacket for Crying out loud. Only a Quin haha
