Pop Culture Fix: The Lesbian “Charmed” Reboot Will be Here in Time For Halloween

Welcome to your weekly pop culture fix, that thing I do when I’m not getting into fights about Serena Williams being the greatest athlete of all time on Twitter.

It’s happening!

+ And if that poster doesn’t have you running around in circles in your living room, get this: Gina Rodriguez is already set to direct a season one episode.

+ The Good Place season three poster is here and I’m adding it to this queer pop culture fix because Eleanor Shellstrop is bisexual and I don’t want to hear any incorrect or dissenting opinions on this subject!

Over at Variety: Amandla Stenberg on The Hate U Give, Beyonce, and Hollywood diversity.

+ Indya Moore deserves the world, and she’s getting it.

+ Roxane Gay gave Insatiable the damning critique it deserved.

+ People are speculating that the character getting the new love interest in this TV Line blind item is Alex Danvers. (Valerie Anne suspects that if this is true, the love interest will come “pre-babied.”)

+ Over at Ebony Laverne Cox talks Pose, trans rep, and the legacy of Aretha.

+ There’s more info about this coming in our 2018 Fall TV Preview, but for now: the Sons of Anarchy spin-off has cast both members of its lesbian couple.

+ Salon published an interesting piece with showrunner interviews and analysis about rebooting beloved TV shows with POC and queer characters.

+ Sue Bird, Sandy Brondello, Alysha Clark and Geno Auriemma have some feelings about why Diana Taurasi has ice water in her veins when it’s playoff time.

+ The revolutionary power of pies in Queen Sugar. (Read this!)

+ Rebecca Sugar is one of the animated TV showrunners interviewed in EW’s piece on the fight to bring LGBTQ characters to kids’ shows.

+ Gone Home really is coming to the Switch, just not in September, I guess.

+ Just a sweet little interview with all-time great Lily Tomlin.

+ Looks like Roseanne’s gonna die in the Connors spin-off.

+ Marceline and Princess Bubblegum are in the Adventure Time series finale!

  1. I’m so forking excited for The Good Place’s return. It’s the smartest show on TV

  2. There are very few shows I have to watch live and The Good Place is one of them. And then naturally the producers’ cut of the episode on Hulu. Time to make a paper chain calendar for when my stories return.

I’ve never seen the original Charmed even though every time I see Ella Montgomery I want to. Is it worth watching???

    • Wooden acting, boring plot, predictable ‘twists’, the writers didn’t know what they were doing with it, very straight. But I cannot even find a small niche of people who agree with my negative opinion, so probably worth a try.

  3. The Charmed reboot looks awful but I’ll watch the first episode to see how lesbionic it is.

I LOVED Insatiable! It was campy and dark. The critics aren’t understanding that it’s not meant to be taken seriously.

    • I agree that it shouldn’t be taken seriously, but it is still a complete and utter mess!
A coming out with casual biphobia, the stereotypical lesbian in love with best friend, a female sexual predator that gets barely a slap on the wrist, a stereotypical gay guy, a male sexual predator story that is almost completely glossed over, plot inconsistencies all over the place and much more is what you get with Insatiable.
