Pop Culture Fix: “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 2 Trailer Is Here and Queer and Horrifying!

Welcome to your weekly Pop Culture Fix, a column name I capitalize and Riese doesn’t for some reason! 

And now it is time for The Handmaid’s Tale season two trailer which is gay out of the gate and absolutely horrifying.

I really loved Fresh Off the Boat‘s season finale, which I wrote about in Boob(s On Your) Tube last week, and I loved it even more after I read out showrunner Nahnatchka Khan’s interview with IndieWire about it. (Kahn is also developing a rom-com for Ali Wong with Netflix.)

Tessa Thompson is a certified action star and now she’s joining Chris Hemsworth for a Men in Black reboot.

Throughout her career, Gist has focused on female-centric stories. For the Spelman alum, it’s been a blessing to put women at the center. “I’ve always said how lucky I was to fall into my dream job on my dream show, Girlfriends,” she revealed. “I was able to learn the craft and practice the craft but tell stories that reflected my life at the time and my friends at the time. That is such a rare thing, especially in this business, especially as a Black woman. So, that was a happy coincidence. I am drawn to telling stories about women, about women of color. That has become my drive in storytelling. I just so happened to get my first job on a show like that.

  3. I liked the MIB(don’t remember much about the III one), but I am not sure why they are rebooting it. I thought it did well enough to not need one? It’s really showing me Hollywood refuses to come out with new ideas. I know they probably don’t read AS, but maybe one of their children are, but here is a good film idea. Two women who are in a relationship going after Aliens. It can be called Lesbialiens or Gal Pal.

  4. I loved Roseanne growing up but I will never watch this reboot. She’s a Trump supporting Terf these days so she can fuck right off.

  8. Haven’t been on AS in forever. And haven’t been signed in even longer. But I just wanna say – The Handmaid’s Tale is a show where every episode I watched I wished I didn’t and I wished I could stop. Watching it reminded me of how I feel when I watch slavery shows/films. So much anger, frustration, sadness and anger (yes I’m aware I said anger twice). On the bright side, for THT, at least it isn’t based off real events. So there is that. Though, at the same time, many parts reminded me of things slaves went through in real life…I dunno if I will watch S2. For my sanity, I probably should not.

  9. i watched the roseanne reboot. it felt very much like childhood roseanne, so it felt good to watch in that way. my roomie wondered aloud if they were going to have a trans character on it, and then we all groaned and glared at her when darlene’s son is introduced wearing femme clothing–watching a trans kid get tortured by their ignorant family so that america can learn a lesson is not what any of us wanted. anyway, it wasn’t the most horrible (mark does not identify as trans at this point so we are spared any debate about that), but you do have to put up with lines like, “since when is masculine a dirty word?”

    there’s lots of people who are not roseanne who are working on the show. i’m interested to see how she represents trump supporters because i super don’t get where they are coming from.
