Pop Culture Fix: Lesbian Movie “Disobedience” To Star Two Actresses Named Rachel, What Next World?

Welcome to the pop culture fix, your weekly update on the world’s most important news stories related to LGBT pop culture, otherwise known as world’s most important topic!

+ Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz will be starring as lesbian lovers in a new film called “Disobedience.” The fact that both actresses are named Rachel will definitely help them figure out how it feels to be a real live lesbian:

In the original book, the story follows young woman (Weisz) who returns to her Orthodox Jewish home after learning about the death of her estranged father. She causes an upheaval in the quiet community when she rekindles a repressed love with her best friend – a woman now married to her cousin.

+ Activist/model/artist/filmmaker/poet Grace Dunham talks to iD magazine about their work and StyleLikeU’s “What’s Underneath” series. Dunham appears in an upcoming episode of the program, which “asks subjects to remove their clothes as they talk about their lives and experiences, with the intention of stripping down being to metaphorically remove the layers of cultural conditioning that we are all subject to.”

+ A new webseries will follow queer ghost hunters in Ohio. Same.

+ Mickailia “Ila” Adu, the child of singer Sade, has come out as a trans man.

Lauren Morelli and Samira Wiley are engaged!

+ One fan is living the dream: X Factor finalist Saara Aalto dumped her boyfriend of nine years to be with her now-fiancé Meri Sopanen, a lesbian who was a superfan of the star and is now her manager. They are now engaged.

+ Tonight at 10PM on CBS, Alexandra Grey will guest star on Code Black, playing a patient who is hesitant to disclose that she is transgender.”

People Talking To People About Things

+ Ms. Magazine talks to our famous friends Jasika Nicole and Brittani Nichols about their famous movie Suicide Kale, which’s killing it on the festival circuit.

+ LA Weekly talks to Silas Howard, a director on Transparent and the director of the cult film By Hook or By Crook, about how the game has changed:

“I’m so used to our community doing amazing stuff and then it lives there. We build the house and then we party in it. We don’t count on anything outside. But here, people want this. They’re ready for it. There was a world out there that hasn’t been seen and it’s not that this show represents all that world, but what it represents is breaking a lot of molds.”

+ Amy Landecker, who plays bisexual character Sarah Pfefferman on Transparent, talks to The Daily Beast.

This is sweet!

  1. Rachel Weisz is going to play a lesbian?? My inner-16-year-old baby gay self is doing back flips.

    • I know!!although i don’t like Rachel McAdams.
Also, gay ghost hunters, hunting ghosts that are gay, awesome!!! Aren’t ghosts asexual though?

      • I’m not a huge fan of Rachel McAdams, either, but I won’t complain! It really is a dream come true…

About asexual ghosts: When I was a teenager, I read a (pretty awful) book called Gardenias Where There Are None. That’s basically about a lesbian ghost who wants to get it on with a live woman. It was so ridiculous I had my straight best friend read it and we laughed and laughed. https://www.amazon.com/Gardenias-Where-There-Are-None/dp/1562800566 in case you’re curious.

        • I cant believe you, im sure the book is great, its out of stock. And the one person who has reviewed the book gave it five stars. The book description says sexually explicit, what? How do you do it with a ghost? The description even calls it romantic?? I am going to read it when i can get my hands on it. :P

          • i can’t remember most of the plot, all that stuck with me is this line: “I want you… I mean to come.. I mean, to come over.” If that’s not a cheesy line, I don’t know what is! I’ll grab the book from my parents house this weekend and re-read it. You can always have my copy, I have a feeling I’ll still find it awful :P

Yes, Westworld is great! I love the music and Evan Rachel Wood. I can tell it’s going to be a good show.

        • Westworld is finally here! And the first episode was gripping. Evan Rachel wood makes a fine dolores , but i found the main manager/director hot too, Theresa cullen. Cant wait for the next episode.

        • Thats a line? For real? ‘I mean to come … i mean to come over…’ hahaha. Wow, that works on so many levels. Sounds fun!

        • But, they said theyll be going to places where supposed gay folks lived. So maybe their ghosts will be gay too. Although im not convinced by ghosts that are sexual.

    • In Definitely Maybe she played the ex girlfriend of Elizabeth Banks… but they both dated the same guy of course.

        • It was all offscreen. Ryan Reynolds reads her college diary (I think she lets him but can’t remember) and she describes the relationship there, especially the physical side. She later introduces him to Elizabeth’s character and he dates her too. Or maybe it’s the other way around.

          • Ok, that sounds vaguely familiar. I’m still not sure, though, if I actually watched Definitely Maybe, or just saw the trailer enough times to imagine that I watched it…

  2. I only stopped to confirm that Rachel is INDEED the gayest name, but then i got to that take on Ring of Keys. Just. I don’t need anything else, maybe ever.

  3. Well if this is confirmed, as opposed to just a rumour/in the works, then it’s something to look forward to. I haven’t see Rachel Weisz in anything for ages, so would be intiguing to see her in a non straight role (unless she’s done one before). Saw Rachel McAdams in Spotlight and True Detective more recently, and thinks she’s great. While she did play a role where there was some same sex intimacy with her and a character, I don’t know what that was about because I never saw it, so, again would be nice to see her in this too, if this film is indeed true.

  4. *spoiler for disobedience*

sadly, from what i’ve heard, the book that the movie is based on ends with the women breaking up. one of them ends up staying with a husband whom she isn’t attracted to.

    • Doesn’t surprise me. It sounds like that sort of flick. When you’re in a religiously conservative community and queer, you’re going to sacrifice something.
