Pop Culture Fix: Clea DuVall’s “But I’m a Cheerleader” Reunion Is Real!

Teevee

+ I think there is a show in the UK called Love Island and I think two women (names: Katie and Sophie) hooked up on that island for the first time in history this week and I think it’s potentially more controversial than the Brexit. I believe they had a fling, and then a “recoupling” and then a breakup over the course of only three episodes. “One night was TOO MUCH for Katie!”

+ True Blood is going to be a musical. Probably it will be the gayest thing in the history of Broadway, which, as you know, is saying something.

+ Gemma Whelan, who plays Yara Greyjoy on Game of Throneswants Daenerys and the queen of the Iron Islands to be together just as much as you do.

“I didn’t expect to meet Daenerys, blimey,” Gemma told Digital Spy. “I knew my story was going to get more traction in later series, but I didn’t quite know I’d be surrounded by dragons in season six … I think she and Daenerys should sail off into the sunset with the Seven Kingdoms holding hands. I think that’s probably about right. Tyrion can stay there, Theon’s got to be there – he can be my hand!”

+ Nielsen says it’s cracked the code on Netflix ratings and that 6.7 million people watch Orange Is the New Black. That’s a lot! (For perspective: Pretty Little Liars averages about 3 million viewers per episode; Grey’s Anatomy averages about 7.5 million.)

Movies

Look here now, look! Clea DuVall has reunited the cast of But I’m a Cheerleader for her new movie, Intervention. She also directed it, okay, and chose Tegan and Sara for the trailer. It premiered at Outfest this weekend.

Queer Humans Out and About In the World

+ Samira Wiley and Danielle Brooks made some orange and black mac and cheese for Buzzfeed and were even more adorable than you’re imagining while they were doing it.

+ Elle is redesigning and to celebrate redesigning they’re releasing four covers this month. Three of them feature Kristen Stewart, Hari Nef and Amandla Stenberg!

  2. Damn. Hit submit too soon.

I’m going to just copy & paste the comment I wrote on my friends FB wall regarding Intervention:

“I swear to god, at this point, Clea DuVall and Natasha Lyonne are literally just making movies to give themselves an excuse to kiss each other. Doesn’t mean I’m not DEFINITELY gonna see this movie, though.”

  3. Three LGBT ladies for Elle’s ‘rise of the rebel’ theme, and the fourth Elle cover is of… well-known rebel / model-chaser Zayn Malik.

    Huh?

    • Yeah seriously. That was a little “which of these things is not like the others” for me.

    • He’s unashamedly a Muslim guy of color, which is important. Having 2 of the 4 be of color is pretty fabulous, actually, and to have them be representing across multiple marginalized identities (Amandla: of color/queer, Zayn: Muslim/of color) even more so. LGBTQ isn’t the only community that needs representation…

  4. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but Sara Quin also scored “Intervention” right?

  5. Omg. Samira and Danielle. That was hilariawesome. They put “hella” amount of Doritos and Cheetos in there! That *almost* makes my heart feel again after the season finale.

  6. Intervention AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH, Even aside from the gay as hell aspect, do you have any idea how many couples need this!? I don’t have exact figures, but I know one, so the number has to be huge.

      • Yeah we all knew, but she has never said anything on record before and until that happens straight people will refuse to accept it no matter how much evidence there is.

        • Meh, there are pictures of her making out in the park with another lady, and other pics similarly inclined.

    • i like this article, mostly cause she talks about why she cast natasha as her gf again, but to say she “came out” and the title of the article which implies that is a bit misleading.

she was at an LGBT writers panel (she was also at the queer filmmakers panel at sundance months ago saying the same stuff) and they just wrote an article around her answers. I’ve seen q and a’s with her where she said she was a proud gay person multiple times. she mentions her gf and being gay on twitter, ya know. i guess i just don’t like the insinuation that she wasn’t out until now, because she was.

  7. I dug The Intervention. It played at SIFF this spring. Solid flick.

Best part of the Q&A – aside from the fact that Lynn Shelton moderated it and it’s just amazing to listen to two smart ladies talk about making films – was when someone asked about a book that pops up in it, called (iirc) The Pilot & the Twig. Clea said Pilot & Twig are her cats, & the author was her girlfriend, and that was possibly the gayest thing she’d ever said. A++ would Q&A again.
